Then Vishnu appeared from the pillar as Narasimha, half man and half lion, and protected the boy. The king tried again and again to harm the boy, but Prahlada was always saved. One day, the king pointed to a pillar and asked, 'Is your god in this pillar?' Prahlada said that he was everywhere. The king struck the pillar in anger, and Vishnu burst out in the form of Narasimha, half man and half lion, who neither lived on land nor in the sky, and who finished the proud king at the doorway at twilight. In this far mountain town, high in the Himalayas, pilgrims remember Vishnu as the lion-faced protector, and many come on their way to Badrinath.

Historyவரலாறு
Joshimath, or Jyotirmath, is one of the four cardinal monasteries (mathas) established by Adi Shankara, the others being at Shringeri, Puri and Dwarka. This northern monastery is in charge of the Atharvaveda. The Katyuri kings ruled the area between the 7th and 11th centuries, and Joshimath was their original capital, according to one historian. The presiding Narasimha is believed to have been installed by Adi Shankara. Sources describe it as a pilgrimage site of the Azhwars, who honoured Vishnu as Narasimha.
