The storyகதை
Two old sages, Vyaghrapada and Patanjali, set out to pray at Srirangam. They were old and their eyes were weak, so they took a wrong turn and ended up in a village in the south.வியாக்ரபாதர், பதஞ்சலி என்ற இரு முதிய முனிவர்கள் திருவரங்கத்தில் வழிபடப் புறப்பட்டனர். கண் பார்வை குறைந்ததால் வழி தவறித் தெற்கே ஒரு கிராமம் வந்தனர்.
They prayed, and the lord of Srirangam came to them. But he was so big that the old sages could not see him clearly.அவர்கள் வேண்ட, திருவரங்கத்து இறைவன் அவர்களிடம் வந்தார். ஆனால் அவர் மிகப் பெரியவராக இருந்ததால் முதிய முனிவர்களால் தெளிவாகக் காண முடியவில்லை.
So the lord became small, like a sleeping child. The lord who became small
Shiva once told a sage named Vyaghrapada, whose name means tiger-footed, to go to Srirangam and pray for a place near Vishnu in Vaikuntha. A second sage, Patanjali, went with him. But the sages were old and their eyes were weak, so they took a wrong turn and went south, until they came to a village called Krupa Samudram, the sea of mercy. They prayed there that the lord of Srirangam should come to them. He did. He showed himself first as Ranganatha, but the old sages could not see so large a figure clearly. Out of kindness, the lord became small, lying in the pose of a sleeping child. This is called Bala Sayanam. The place became Siru Puli Ur, the village of the little tiger, because the sage was tiger-footed and the lord had become small.
சிறியவராக ஆன இறைவன்

Historyவரலாறு
The temple lies about 17 km from Mayiladuthurai and 10 km from Karaikal, 2 km from Kollumangudi. The sources report that the sage Vyasa also received the lord's vision here. Tradition holds that Garuda does not fly over this place, because Vishnu once sided with Adisesha in an argument between the serpent and the eagle about who was more devoted.

The central image shows Vishnu in the reclining pose, facing south, but in a small form called Bala Sayanam. Only two Divya Desams show Vishnu reclining and facing south: this one and Srirangam. The temple follows the Dravidian style.
