A prince, a forest and a long wait
Long ago, the land that is now Nagapattinam was a quiet forest known as Sundararanyam. A young prince named Dhruva heard how holy it was and decided to meditate there, hoping to see Vishnu. He sat for many days, never giving up, until the lord appeared before him. Later the great sage Markandeya followed the prince's example and received a vision in another age, and so did King Saleesa Chola in the age of Kali. People say a flowing branch of the Kaveri, called the Odambokki, passes close to the temple, and that is why the lord is also called Kaveri Thuraivan. The story reminds visitors that patient, steady effort, like the prince's, is often what opens the door to something wonderful.

Historyவரலாறு
The temple received gifts from the Pallavas, Nagars and Cholas between the 8th and 10th centuries, and later from the Thanjavur Nayaks and Marathas. In Nayak times, Nagapattinam was a busy port with a Dutch settlement, and it is said that when the Dutch asked for a lighthouse, the Nayak king used the seven-tiered temple tower. Jagul Nayakar, an officer of the 1650s, is believed to have built the tower, halls and compound wall, and his image stands in one of the halls with that of his wife.

The east-facing entrance has a four-pillared open hall and a 27-metre gateway tower, with a smaller tower on the west. Broad streets around the temple are used by the chariot. The southern street holds the chariot's station and the temple tank, the Sara Pushkarani. The temple has a rare image of Narasimha with eight hands: one blesses Prahlada, one shows the gesture of fearlessness, and the others are shown in the slaying of the demon Hiranyakashipu. A four-pillared hall in front of Soundaravalli's shrine is beautifully carved.
