The storyகதை
A priest named Rangabhatta gave the lord fresh flower garlands every day. One day the king found a long hair in a garland and asked what it was.ரங்கபட்டர் என்ற பூசாரி தினமும் இறைவனுக்குப் புதிய பூமாலைகள் சூட்டினார். ஒருநாள் மாலையில் ஒரு நீண்ட முடியைக் கண்ட மன்னன் அது என்ன என்று கேட்டான்.
The priest said, "It is the lord's own hair." The king did not believe him. But just then the lord showed himself with long curly hair, called a sowri.பூசாரி, "இது இறைவனின் முடிதான்" என்றார். மன்னன் நம்பவில்லை. அப்போது இறைவன் 'சௌரி' எனப்படும் நீண்ட சுருள் முடியுடன் காட்சி தந்தார்.
The king bowed in wonder. That is why the lord is called Sowriraja Perumal, the king with the curly hair.மன்னன் வியந்து வணங்கினான். அதனால் இறைவன் 'சௌரிராஜப் பெருமாள்' (சுருள்முடி மன்னன்).

The hair in the garland
Rangabhatta was a priest who served the lord every day, offering fresh flower garlands. A kind woman used to make the garlands, and in her love for the lord, she would first try one on before sending it to the temple. One day, the king found a single long hair in the garland and sent for the priest. The priest was terrified, but he spoke the truth as he understood it: the hair, he said, was the lord's own. The king did not believe him and grew angry. He ordered that the lord's image be checked. At that moment, the lord himself appeared before the king wearing a sowri, the long curled hair worn by some devotees of the time. The king bowed his head in wonder. From that day, the lord of this place has been called Sowriraja Perumal, the king with the lock of hair.

ரங்கபட்டர் என்ற அர்ச்சகர் தினமும் இறைவனுக்குப் புதிய மலர்மாலைகளைச் சமர்ப்பித்து வந்தார். ஓர் அன்பான பெண் அம்மாலைகளைத் தொடுத்து வந்தாள்; இறைவன்மீதுள்ள அன்பால் கோயிலுக்கு அனுப்பும் முன் அவற்றை முதலில் தானே அணிந்து பார்ப்பாள். ஒருநாள் மன்னன் மாலையில் ஒரு நீண்ட முடியைக் கண்டு அர்ச்சகரை அழைத்தான். அர்ச்சகர் அஞ்சினாலும், தான் அறிந்த உண்மையைச் சொன்னார்: அந்த முடி இறைவனுடையதே என்றார். மன்னன் நம்பாமல் சினந்தான்; இறைவனின் திருமேனியைச் சோதிக்க ஆணையிட்டான். அந்தக் கணமே இறைவன் தாமே மன்னன் முன் தோன்றினார்; அக்காலத்தில் சில அடியார்கள் அணிந்த நீண்ட சுருண்ட முடியான சௌரி அவர் தலையில் இருந்தது. மன்னன் வியந்து தலை வணங்கினான். அன்று முதல் இத்தலத்து இறைவன் சௌரிராஜப் பெருமாள், அதாவது முடிக்கற்றை உடைய அரசன், என அழைக்கப்படுகிறார்.
Historyவரலாறு
The temple is believed to have been started by the Cholas in the late 9th century, with later contributions. The Brahmanda and Padma Puranas refer to it. In the Padma Purana's story, a flying king named Vasu mistook some sages for demons and attacked them, until Vishnu appeared as a boy of sixteen and defeated him. The temple is mentioned in the 108 Tirupathi Anthathi and has been praised in works by later poets.

Architectureகட்டிடக்கலை
A seven-tiered main gateway about 30 metres high rises over a large temple complex of about an acre and a half. The second gateway tower is about 18 metres tall. The sanctum holds Neelamegha Perumal, with Sridevi, Bhudevi, the sage Dandaka and Garuda, while the festival image Sowriraja Perumal is shown with four consorts: Sridevi, Bhudevi, Padmini and Andal. The temple tank is right opposite the temple.
