The butter Krishna and the sage's chase
The sage Vasishtha loved Krishna so deeply that he made an image of him out of butter and worshipped it with great care. Krishna, in the form of a little child, appeared one day, picked up the butter image and ate it all up. Then, laughing, he ran away. Vasishtha followed him, calling and running, over the fields and through the villages, until the child ran into this peaceful forest where many sages were meditating. Krishna told them he would be bound by their devotion, and asked them to help Vasishtha. The sages asked him to stay and let all devotees see him as they had seen him. Krishna agreed. Everyone, including the tired Vasishtha, was filled with joy at the sight. The village still celebrates the idea that God can be caught by love.

Historyவரலாறு
The temple is believed to have been started by the Cholas in the late 9th century, with later contributions from Vijayanagara kings and Madurai Nayaks. Lists differ on which Azhwar sang here: the sources say Thirumazhisai Azhwar, while some traditional lists credit Thirumangai Azhwar with a decad on this place. It is one of the five Panchakanna Kshetrams, four in Chola Nadu and one in Nadu Nadu.

The temple has a five-tiered gateway tower, a granite wall and a large complex, and the temple tank is right outside. The flagpole stands in line with the entrance and the sanctum, and the sanctum is approached through two pillared halls, the Mukha Mandapa and the Ardha Mandapa. Loganayaki and other deities have shrines in the first and second enclosures.
