The story
The teacher who shared the secret with everyone
Ramanuja, the great teacher, travelled to Thirukoshtiyur to learn a sacred eight-syllable mantra from his teacher, Thirukoshtiyur Nambi. The teacher told him to keep the secret, for it would give salvation only to a few worthy students. But Ramanuja believed that such a gift should be offered to everyone. Climbing to the top of the temple, he is said to have called out the mantra to the crowd below. His teacher was upset at first, but he soon understood Ramanuja's kindness and embraced him. The tower is a reminder of the day. The temple is also known for another story, when the gods asked Vishnu to show the form of Narasimha not once but again and again, and he appeared in standing, sitting and reclining forms in the three storeys of the sanctum.
