The great serpent Adisesha, the bed on which Vishnu rests, once wished to change his nature from the quality of darkness to the quality of purity. Historyவரலாறு
Historians believe the temple was built by the Pallavas in the 9th century. M. A. Dhaky places it in the seventh decade of that century and compares its images with those of the Vijayalaya Choleeswaram at Narthamalai, built by the Muttaraiyar kings in the same period. Another view is that a vassal of the Pallavas built it following the rock-cut style of Mamallapuram. An inscription records gifts by Perumbidugu Perumdevi, the mother of a Muttaraiyar king. Thirumangai Azhwar sang of the temple.

The temple is old and large, built into a rock. The main statue of Sathyamurthy Perumal, about seven feet tall, stands on a rock with his consorts. Adishesha in the temple is believed to be a protective force.
