Rupees and Paise Sums: Class 2 Study Guide
Money problems use addition and subtraction every day, in shops and at home.
In Class 2, children use the rupee sign ₹ to add and subtract amounts such as ₹36 + ₹24. They also learn that 100 paise make 1 rupee, and that a number like ₹5.50 means 5 rupees and 50 paise.
Paise coins are hardly used now, but paise still appear in prices and bills, so it helps to understand them.
Making an amount in different ways
The same amount can be made with different coins and notes. To make ₹20 you could use two ₹10 notes, or one ₹10 note and two ₹5 coins, or one ₹20 note.
| Way | Coins / notes | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | ₹10 + ₹10 | ₹20 |
| 2 | ₹10 + ₹5 + ₹5 | ₹20 |
| 3 | ₹10 + ₹5 + ₹2 + ₹2 + ₹1 | ₹20 |
Add and subtract
To add ₹36 and ₹24, add the ones (6 + 4 = 10, write 0, carry 1), then the tens (3 + 2 + 1 = 6). The total is ₹60. To find the change from ₹50 for a ₹32 toy, count on from 32: ₹3 more makes ₹35, ₹5 more makes ₹40, ₹10 more makes ₹50. The change is ₹18.
What do we know?
Total or left?
Line up tens and ones.
And check it makes sense.
Paise and rupees
100 paise = ₹1. So 50 paise is half a rupee, and 150 paise is ₹1 and 50 paise, written ₹1.50. Remember the dot separates rupees from paise.
Worked examples and common mistakes
Example: Asha has ₹45 and buys a notebook for ₹28. 45 − 28 = ₹17 left. Example: A pen costs ₹12 and a pencil ₹8. Together they cost ₹20. Common mistakes: forgetting the ₹ sign in the answer, and taking the smaller digit from the larger one when subtracting. Regroup a ten when needed.
Check your understanding: model answers
1. A ₹20 note and a ₹10 note, or three ₹10 notes. 2. ₹25, because 60 − 35 = 25. 3. 200 paise.
