Transport is how people and goods move from one place to another. We travel on land by bicycle, scooter, car, bus, auto-rickshaw, train and metro. We travel on water by boat and ferry, and in the air by aeroplane and helicopter.

India has a very large railway network, and many people take a train for long journeys. In big cities there are also metro trains, buses and shared autos.

WaterBoat, ferry, ship
AirAeroplane, helicopter

Travelling safely

Always hold an adult's hand near a road. Cross at a zebra crossing when the vehicles have stopped. Sit properly in a bus or car and wear a seat belt if there is one. On a two-wheeler, children should wear a helmet. At a railway station, stay behind the yellow line.

1
Stop

At the edge of the road.

2
Look

Right, left, right.

3
Listen

For horns and engines.

4
Cross

When it is clear, holding an adult's hand.

Why does the choice of transport matter?

A cycle or a walk does not make smoke. A full bus carries many people with less fuel than many cars. Choosing shared transport helps keep the air cleaner.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: Count the vehicles you see on the way to school and make a tally chart.

Worked examples and common mistakes

Example: Is a ferry land, water or air transport? Water. Example: Where should we wait on a station platform? Behind the yellow line. Common mistakes: running across the road, leaning out of a window, and putting an arm out of a moving bus.

Check your understanding: model answers

1. A boat and a ferry. 2. Stop, look right-left-right, listen, then cross holding an adult's hand. 3. A bus carries many people at once, so there is less traffic and smoke.
