Opposites, Rhyming Words and Vocabulary: Class 2 Study Guide

A rich vocabulary helps you say what you mean, and word games make learning fun.

CLASS 2 · ENGLISHOpposites, Rhyming Words and Vocabulary🔤🎶📖🗣️

Opposites (antonyms) are words that mean the opposite: hot and cold, up and down, happy and sad. Rhyming words have the same ending sound: cat and hat, bee and tree. Word families share a common ending (-ight: light, night, bright).

Learning words in groups helps memory. Colours, fruits, animals, family members, school things and days of the week are all word groups that children can collect.

Rhymes

Rhymes help us enjoy poems and songs. To find a rhyme, say the word and change the first sound: sun → fun → run → bun. Rhyming words do not need the same spelling: blue and shoe rhyme. Practise by finishing lines: 'The cat sat on the ___ (mat).'

1
Say the word

star

2
Change the first sound

car, far, jar

3
Check the ending

They all end in -ar.

4
Use it

Twinkle, twinkle, little star.

New words in context

When you meet a new word, look at the words around it. The soup was so hot that Dad blew on it to cool it. From the sentence we can guess that 'cool' means to make less hot. Write new words in a small notebook with the meaning and your own sentence.

Worked examples and common mistakes

Opposite of 'brave': afraid. Which word rhymes with 'play'? day. Common mistakes: picking a word with the same first letter instead of the same ending (play and pig do not rhyme), and picking a 'different' word instead of an opposite (hot and big are not opposites). Say both words in a sentence to test.

💡 Pro Tip: Make a 'word wall' at home with a new opposite pair each day.

Check your understanding: model answers

1. weak (or soft), dark (or heavy). 2. call, fall, tall. 3. Example: The elephant was enormous.
