Road Safety and Signs: Class 2 Study Guide

Roads are shared by walkers, cyclists and vehicles. Simple rules keep everyone safe.

CLASS 2 ยท EVSRoad Safety and Signs๐Ÿšฆ๐Ÿšธ๐Ÿšฒ๐Ÿ›‘

Every day we use roads to get to school, the market or a friend's house. Knowing the rules helps us avoid accidents.

Drivers and walkers both have to follow the signals. Children should always cross the road with an adult until they are old enough to do it carefully.

Traffic lights

A traffic light has three colours. Each tells drivers and walkers what to do.

ColourWhat it means for vehiclesWhat it means for walkers
RedStopDo not cross
Yellow (amber)Get ready to stop or goWait
GreenGoCars may move; cross only at the walkers' signal

Road signs and zebra crossings

Signs have shapes and colours that give clues. Round signs with a red border give orders, such as No Entry. Triangular signs warn, such as School Ahead. A zebra crossing has black and white stripes and is a place where walkers can cross. Walk on the footpath and, if there is none, on the right-hand side facing the traffic.

1
Stop

Stand at the kerb.

2
Look

Look right, left and right again.

3
Listen

Listen for vehicles.

4
Walk

Cross when it is safe, holding an adult's hand.

On a bicycle or in a car

Wear a helmet on a bicycle and keep to the side of the road. In a car, always wear a seat belt and sit in the back seat if you are young. Never put your head or hands out of a window. Wait for the school bus on the pavement, not on the road.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: Draw the three colours of a traffic light and write what each means.

Worked examples and common mistakes

Example: The light for vehicles is green. Can walkers cross? Not until it is safe and the walkers' signal says so. Common mistakes: running across the road, playing near traffic, and crossing between parked cars where drivers cannot see you.

Check your understanding: model answers

1. Get ready to stop. 2. At a zebra crossing, with an adult. 3. To protect us if the car stops suddenly.
