The Lost Library Bookதொலைந்த நூலகப் புத்தகம்

சனிக்கிழமை காலையில் நூலகம் அமைதியாக இருந்தது. மாயா தன் அப்பா, தம்பி கவினுடன் அங்கே சென்றாள். இரவல் வாங்கிய விண்வெளிப் புத்தகத்தைத் திருப்பிக் கொடுக்க வேண்டிய கடைசி நாள் அன்றுதான். அந்தப் புத்தகத்தில் கோள்களின் படங்கள் இருந்ததால் மாயாவுக்கு அது மிகவும் பிடித்திருந்தது.

ஆனால் பையைத் திறந்தபோது புத்தகம் உள்ளே இல்லை. மாயாவின் இதயம் வேகமாகத் துடித்தது. “அக்கா, புத்தகம் தொலைந்துவிட்டது போல இருக்கிறது” என்று நூலகர் சுமதியிடம் மெதுவாகச் சொன்னாள். நூலகத்தில் இருந்த மற்ற குழந்தைகள் எல்லோரும் திரும்பிப் பார்த்தார்கள்.

சுமதி புன்னகையுடன், “கவலைப்படாதே, நிதானமாக யோசிப்போம். கடைசியாக எங்கே படித்தாய்?” என்று கேட்டாள். மாயா கண்களை மூடி நினைவுபடுத்திப் பார்த்தாள். நேற்று மாலை பூங்காவில் படித்தது அவளுக்கு நினைவுக்கு வந்தது. அப்பா, “தேடுவதற்கு முன் நடந்ததை வரிசையாக நினைத்துப் பார்” என்று மெதுவாக நினைவூட்டினார்.

மாயாவும் கவினும் அப்பாவுடன் அருகிலிருந்த பூங்காவுக்கு விரைந்தார்கள். மரப் பெஞ்சின் கீழே எதுவும் இல்லை. ஆனால் குப்பைத் தொட்டிக்குப் பக்கத்தில் பனியில் நனைந்த புல்லில் ஒரு சிறிய புத்தகம் கிடப்பதைக் கவின் பார்த்தான். அவன் மகிழ்ச்சியோடு ஓடிச் சென்று அதை எடுத்தான், ஏனெனில் தன் அக்காவின் கவலை தீரப்போகிறது என்று அவனுக்குத் தெரிந்தது.

அது மாயாவின் புத்தகம்தான்! அட்டை ஈரமாக இருந்தாலும் பக்கங்கள் நன்றாகவே இருந்தன. மாயா அதை மென்மையாகத் துடைத்தாள். “இனிமேல் கவனமாக வைத்துக்கொள்வேன்” என்று தனக்குள் சொல்லிக்கொண்டாள்.

நூலகத்துக்குத் திரும்பியதும் சுமதி புத்தகத்தை வாங்கிப் பார்த்தாள். “நீ நேர்மையாகச் சொன்னதால்தான் நாம் இதைக் கண்டுபிடிக்க முடிந்தது” என்றாள். அன்று முதல் மாயா ஒவ்வொரு புத்தகத்துக்கும் ஒரு துணிப் பையை வைத்துக்கொண்டாள். கவின் தன் அக்காவைப் பார்த்துப் பெருமையாகப் புன்னகைத்தான்.

On Saturday morning the library was quiet. Maya went there with her father and her little brother Kavin. It was the last day to return the space book she had borrowed. Maya loved it because it had pictures of the planets.

But when she opened her bag, the book was not inside. Maya's heart beat fast. All the other children in the library turned to look. “Sumathi, I think the book is lost,” she told the librarian softly.

Sumathi smiled and said, “Don't worry, let's think calmly. Where did you read it last?” Maya closed her eyes and tried to remember. She recalled reading it in the park yesterday evening. Her father gently reminded her, “Before you search, think back over what happened, step by step.”

Maya and Kavin hurried to the nearby park with their father. There was nothing under the wooden bench. But next to the bin, Kavin saw a small book lying in the dew-wet grass. He happily ran over and picked it up, because he knew his sister's worry was about to end.

It was Maya's book! The cover was damp, but the pages were fine. Maya wiped it gently. “From now on I will look after it carefully,” she told herself.

Back at the library, Sumathi took the book and looked at it. “We could find it because you told the truth,” she said. From that day, Maya kept a cloth bag for every book she borrowed. Kavin smiled proudly at his sister.
