Cricket in the Park with a New Friendபூங்காவில் புதிய நண்பன்

ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை மாலையில் பூங்காவில் சூரியன் மெல்லச் சாய்ந்துகொண்டிருந்தது. பிரவீணும் அவன் நண்பர்களும் வழக்கம்போல கிரிக்கெட் விளையாடத் தயாரானார்கள். ஒவ்வொருவரும் தலைக்கவசத்தையும் கையுறையையும் அணிந்துகொண்டார்கள். விளையாட்டு பாதுகாப்பாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதில் அவர்கள் எப்போதும் கவனமாக இருப்பார்கள். பூங்காவில் பறவைகள் கீச்சிட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தன, அருகில் சில குழந்தைகள் ஊஞ்சலில் ஆடிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.

ஆனால் ஒரு பிரச்சினை இருந்தது. ஒரு அணியில் ஆறு பேரும் மற்ற அணியில் ஐந்து பேரும் மட்டுமே இருந்தார்கள். அப்போது அருகிலுள்ள வீட்டுக்குப் புதிதாகக் குடிவந்த சிறுவன் தருண் தயங்கியபடி வேலியருகே நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தான்.

பிரவீண் அவனிடம் சென்று, “நீயும் எங்களோடு சேர்ந்து விளையாடுகிறாயா?” என்று கேட்டான். தருண் வெட்கத்துடன், “எனக்கு இந்த விளையாட்டு அவ்வளவாகத் தெரியாது” என்றான். “பரவாயில்லை, நாங்கள் சொல்லித் தருகிறோம்” என்று பிரவீண் சிரித்தான். தருணின் முகத்தில் மெல்ல ஒரு புன்னகை பூத்தது.

முதலில் தருண் பந்தை அடிக்கத் தவறினான். சிலர் சிரித்தார்கள். அதைப் பார்த்த பிரவீண், “எல்லோரும் ஆரம்பத்தில் இப்படித்தான் தடுமாறுவோம்” என்று சொல்லி, மட்டையைப் பிடிக்கும் முறையை அவனுக்குக் காட்டினான்.

சிறிது நேரத்தில் தருண் பந்தை அழகாக வீசக் கற்றுக்கொண்டான். அவன் வீசிய பந்து நேராகச் சென்று விக்கெட்டை வீழ்த்தியது. எல்லோரும் ஆரவாரத்துடன் கைதட்டினார்கள். முன்பு சிரித்தவர்களும் இப்போது அவனைப் பாராட்டினார்கள். தருணின் கண்களில் மகிழ்ச்சி மின்னியது.

இருட்டுவதற்கு முன் எல்லோரும் உபகரணங்களை எடுத்துக்கொண்டார்கள். தருண், “என்னைச் சேர்த்துக்கொண்டதற்கு நன்றி” என்றான். பிரவீண், “நட்பு என்பது வெற்றி தோல்வியை விட முக்கியம்” என்று சொன்னான். அவர்கள் அடுத்த ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமையும் சந்திப்பதாக முடிவு செய்தார்கள்.

On Sunday evening the sun was slowly sinking over the park. Praveen and his friends got ready to play cricket as usual. Each of them put on a helmet and gloves. They were always careful to keep the game safe. Birds were chirping in the park, and some children nearby were swinging on the swings.

But there was a problem. One team had six players and the other had only five. Just then, Tharun, a boy who had newly moved into a nearby house, was standing hesitantly by the fence.

Praveen went up to him and asked, “Would you like to play with us?” Tharun said shyly, “I don't really know this game.” “That's all right, we'll teach you,” Praveen said with a smile. A smile slowly bloomed on Tharun's face.

At first Tharun missed the ball. Some people laughed. Seeing this, Praveen said, “Everyone stumbles like this at the beginning,” and showed him how to hold the bat.

Before long Tharun learned to bowl nicely. The ball he bowled went straight and knocked down the wicket. Everyone clapped with cheers. Even those who had laughed before now praised him. Joy shone in Tharun's eyes.

Before it got dark, everyone packed up the gear. Tharun said, “Thank you for including me.” Praveen said, “Friendship is more important than winning or losing.” They decided to meet again next Sunday.
