The Community Garden in the Heatவெயிலில் வாடிய தோட்டம்

நகரத்தின் ஓரத்தில் உள்ள சமூகத் தோட்டத்தில் ஒவ்வொரு ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமையும் பலர் ஒன்று கூடுவார்கள். நிலாவும் அவளுடைய தாத்தாவும் அங்கே ஒரு சிறிய நிலத்தைப் பராமரித்து வந்தார்கள். அவர்கள் தக்காளியையும் கீரையையும் நட்டிருந்தார்கள். தாத்தா தினமும் காலையில் வந்து மண்ணைத் தொட்டுப் பார்த்து, செடிகள் எப்படி வளர்கின்றன என்று கவனிப்பார்.

அந்த வாரம் மெல்பர்னில் கடுமையான வெயில் அடித்தது. நிலா தோட்டத்துக்குச் சென்றபோது இளம் செடிகள் வாடித் தொங்கிக்கொண்டிருந்தன. “தாத்தா, நம் உழைப்பெல்லாம் வீணாகிவிடுமா?” என்று கண்ணீருடன் கேட்டாள். அவளுடைய குரல் நடுங்கியது.

தாத்தா அவள் தோளில் கை வைத்து, “செடிகளும் நம்மைப்போலத்தான், அவற்றுக்கும் தாகமும் களைப்பும் வரும். உதவி செய்தால் மீண்டும் உயிர் பெறும்” என்றார். பிறகு இருவரும் கையுறைகளை அணிந்துகொண்டு வேலையைத் தொடங்கினார்கள்.

பக்கத்து நிலத்தில் வேலை செய்த செல்வி அத்தை ஒரு பெரிய நிழல் வலையைக் கொண்டுவந்து உதவினார். எல்லோரும் சேர்ந்து அதைக் கம்புகளில் கட்டினார்கள். இளம் செடிகளுக்கு மேலே குளிர்ச்சியான நிழல் விழுந்தது. நிலா அதைப் பார்த்து, “இது ஒரு பெரிய குடை போல இருக்கிறது” என்று சிரித்தாள். செடிகளும் சற்று நிம்மதியாக நிற்பது போலத் தோன்றியது.

நிலா சிறிய நீர்க்குவளையால் ஒவ்வொரு செடிக்கும் மெதுவாகத் தண்ணீர் ஊற்றினாள். மண் ஈரமாகும் வரை பொறுமையாகக் காத்திருந்தாள். தாத்தா, “வெயில் குறைந்த காலையிலும் மாலையிலும் தண்ணீர் விடுவதுதான் நல்லது” என்று கற்றுக்கொடுத்தார்.

மூன்று நாட்களுக்குப் பிறகு செடிகள் மீண்டும் பசுமையாக நிமிர்ந்து நின்றன. நிலா மகிழ்ச்சியோடு மற்ற குழந்தைகளுக்கும் இந்த முறையைச் சொல்லிக்கொடுத்தாள். வேலை முடிந்ததும் எல்லோரும் கைகளை நன்றாகக் கழுவிக்கொண்டார்கள். அந்த ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை நிலா, உதவி கேட்பதும் உதவி செய்வதும் தோட்டத்தை மட்டுமல்ல, மனிதர்களையும் வளரச் செய்யும் என்பதைக் கற்றுக்கொண்டாள்.

In the community garden on the edge of the city, many people gather every Sunday. Nila and her grandfather looked after a small plot there. They had planted tomatoes and spinach. Every morning Grandpa would come, touch the soil and watch how the plants were growing.

That week Melbourne had a harsh heat. When Nila went to the garden, the young plants were drooping and wilted. “Grandpa, will all our hard work be wasted?” she asked with tears in her eyes. Her voice trembled.

Grandpa put his hand on her shoulder and said, “Plants are just like us. They also get thirsty and tired. If we help them, they will come back to life.” Then the two of them put on gloves and began the work.

Selvi Aunty, who worked on the next plot, brought a big shade cloth to help. Everyone tied it onto poles together. Cool shade fell over the young plants. Nila looked at it and laughed, “It looks like a big umbrella.” The plants seemed to stand a little more at ease.

Nila poured water gently onto each plant with a small watering can. She waited patiently until the soil was moist. Grandpa taught her, “It is best to water in the morning or evening, when the heat has eased.”

After three days the plants stood up again, fresh and green. Nila happily taught the other children this method. When the work was done, everyone washed their hands well. That Sunday Nila learned that asking for help and giving help makes not only the garden grow, but the people too.
