Grandma's Brass Lampபாட்டியின் பித்தளை விளக்கு

மழை பெய்த ஒரு மாலை நேரத்தில் ஆதிரா மேசையின் முன் கவலையோடு உட்கார்ந்திருந்தாள். பள்ளியில் “என் குடும்பத்தின் பழைய பொருள்” என்ற தலைப்பில் ஒரு சிறிய உரை தயாரிக்க வேண்டியிருந்தது. ஆனால் எந்தப் பொருளைக் காட்டுவது என்று அவளுக்குத் தெரியவில்லை. சன்னலுக்கு வெளியே மழைத்துளிகள் மெல்லிய இசையோடு விழுந்துகொண்டிருந்தன, ஆனால் அவளுடைய மனம் எங்கும் அலைந்தது.

அப்போது பாட்டி தேநீருடன் வந்து, “ஏன் முகம் வாடியிருக்கிறது?” என்று கேட்டாள். ஆதிரா நிலைமையைச் சொன்னாள். பாட்டி சிரித்துக்கொண்டே தன் பழைய மரப் பெட்டியைத் திறந்தாள். பெட்டியிலிருந்து பழைய துணியின் மணம் வீசியது.

உள்ளே பளபளப்பான ஒரு சிறிய பித்தளை விளக்கு இருந்தது. “இதை என் அம்மா எனக்குத் திருமணத்தின்போது கொடுத்தார். நான் இந்த நாட்டுக்கு வந்தபோது இதைத்தான் முதலில் பெட்டியில் வைத்தேன்” என்றாள் பாட்டி.

பிறகு பாட்டி தன் சிறுவயது கிராமத்தைப் பற்றிச் சொன்னாள். அங்கே மாலையில் எல்லோரும் திண்ணையில் அமர்ந்து கதை பேசுவார்களாம். விளக்கு ஏற்றியதும் வீடே அமைதியால் நிரம்பும் என்றாள். ஆதிரா ஆவலோடு குறிப்பேட்டில் எழுதிக்கொண்டாள். “பாட்டி, நீங்கள் இவ்வளவு கதைகள் வைத்திருப்பீர்கள் என்று எனக்குத் தெரியவே இல்லை” என்றாள்.

அடுத்த வாரம் ஆசிரியரின் அனுமதியோடு ஆதிரா விளக்கை வகுப்புக்குக் கொண்டுவந்தாள். பாதுகாப்புக்காக அதை ஏற்றாமல் மேசையில் வைத்தே பாட்டியின் கதையைச் சொன்னாள். வகுப்பிலிருந்த மற்ற மாணவர்களும் தங்கள் வீட்டுப் பொருட்களைப் பற்றிப் பேச ஆசைப்பட்டார்கள்.

வகுப்பே அமைதியாகக் கேட்டது. ஆசிரியர், “ஒரு சிறிய பொருளுக்குள் இத்தனை கதை இருக்கும் என்று இன்றுதான் தெரிந்தது” என்றார். அன்று முதல் ஆதிரா பாட்டியின் ஒவ்வொரு கதையையும் தமிழில் எழுதி வைக்கத் தொடங்கினாள்.

On a rainy evening Adhira sat worried at the table. At school she had to prepare a short talk called “An Old Object from My Family”. But she did not know which object to show. Outside the window the raindrops fell with a gentle tune, but her mind wandered everywhere.

Just then Grandma came in with tea and asked, “Why is your face so sad?” Adhira explained her situation. Smiling, Grandma opened her old wooden box. The smell of old cloth drifted out of it.

Inside was a small, shiny brass lamp. “My mother gave me this when I got married. When I came to this country, this was the first thing I put in my box,” said Grandma.

Then Grandma told her about the village of her childhood. There, in the evenings, everyone used to sit on the front verandah and chat. She said that once the lamp was lit, the whole house would fill with peace. Adhira eagerly wrote it all down in her notebook. “Grandma, I never knew you had so many stories,” she said.

The next week, with her teacher's permission, Adhira brought the lamp to class. For safety she did not light it, but kept it on the desk and told Grandma's story. The other students in the class also wanted to talk about objects from their own homes.

The whole class listened quietly. The teacher said, “I only learned today that so many stories can live inside one small object.” From that day, Adhira began to write down each of Grandma's stories in Tamil.
