Thirupathisaram for kids: a horse, a pond and a baby who never cried
Two stories about a king-poet and a baby saint.
The storyகதை
A king named Kulasekara returned from a journey and found his horse had wandered off. He searched everywhere and found it peacefully grazing on the bank of a temple tank called the Soma Tirtham.
The king bathed in the tank and felt wonderfully refreshed. He worshipped at the Vishnu temple and named the place Thiruvanparisaram ('pari' is the Tamil word for horse). He went on to become Kulasekhara Azhwar, the poet-king.
Tradition also says the poet Nammazhwar was born near here, as a baby who never cried and never opened his eyes, and was carried to a temple by the river Thamirabarani.

The story
The king who lost his horse
A king named Kulasekara once returned from a conquest and found that his horse had wandered off. He searched everywhere and at last found the animal peacefully grazing on the bank of a temple tank called the Soma Tirtham. The king bathed in the tank, and he felt wonderfully refreshed. He worshipped the Vishnu temple on the bank, and he is said to have built the temple and named the place Thiruvanparisaram, with 'pari' being the Tamil word for horse. He went on to become Kulasekhara Azhwar, the poet-king. In another story from the same place, tradition says that the poet Nammazhwar was born here, as a baby who never cried and never opened his eyes, and who was carried to a temple by the river Thamirabarani.
History
The exact history cannot be ascertained from the inscriptions. The oldest inscription dates from 1139, when a person named Natesan Chetti from Rajendra Cholapattinam made a donation. Two other inscriptions are dated 1613 and 1785. A local account says the Nayak king Thirumalai Nayak (1623 to 1659) built the stepped temple tank. According to legend, the sage Saptarishis worshipped Vishnu here, and the king Kulasekhara built the temple.
Architecture
The temple covers about two acres, with a five-tiered gateway tower and granite walls in a rectangular enclosure. The presiding deity, Thiruvazhmarban, is seated. There is no separate shrine for Lakshmi because she is believed to reside in his chest. The images of the Saptarishis surround the deity, with Rama, Lakshmana and Sita to the right. The image is made of a compound of lime and granite.
