There are nine shrines in the wooded ravine of Upper Ahobilam, each honouring a different aspect: Ahobila, Bhargava, Jvala, Yoganandam, Chatravata, Karanja, Pavana, Malola and Varaha. The first, Ahobilanarasimha, is the oldest shrine and is dedicated to the fierce form. Pilgrims walk from one to the next through forest paths, as though following the footsteps of the story, and many say that they come away with a very quiet kind of strength.

Historyவரலாறு
Ahobilam's history before the 16th century is obscure. One of its earliest literary references is in Thirumangai Azhwar's Periya Thirumozhi, which is why it was counted among the 108 Divya Desams. It also appears in Sanskrit and Telugu texts between the 12th and 16th centuries. Inscriptions show that the shrines received patronage from the Kakatiya and Reddi dynasties in the 13th and 14th centuries, and the historical record grows stronger under the Vijayanagara rulers.

The town is home to ten shrines of Narasimha. It is divided into Lower Ahobilam and Upper Ahobilam, which are about 8 km apart. Upper Ahobilam is a forested area that sprawls up a ravine, with nine Narasimha shrines. The Ahobilanarasimha shrine is the earliest of these.
