Pilgrims climb 1,305 steps to reach him. The old name of the place, Kadigachalam, comes from 'kadigai', a unit of time of about twenty-four minutes. Sholingur is a town of two hills. On the bigger hill sits the temple of Yoga Narasimha, the lord of the lion face, in a deep and quiet pose of meditation. Pilgrims climb 1,305 steps to reach him. The name of the old place, Kadigachalam, comes from the word 'kadigai', which is a unit of time of about twenty-four minutes. Tradition says that even a short worship of that length, a kadigai, here is enough to bring a blessing. It is said that the sage Vishwamitra earned the title of Brahmarishi, the greatest of sages, in this very place. The climb, say pilgrims, is also part of the prayer, one step at a time, and the quiet at the top is the answer.

Historyவரலாறு
The place was originally called Cholasimhapuram, which later became Sholinghar. Scriptures call it Kadigachalam or Thirukadigai. Pey Azhwar describes the lord as 'Vaan Poonkadigai Ilankumaran'. The Vishnu Purana and the Padma Purana refer to the place as Kadigai, and since Vishwamitra got his Brahmarishi title here, it also became Simhapuram. The temple has many inscriptions at the foot of the hill and on top. It is believed to be one of the 74 seats established by Ramanuja to spread Vishishtadvaita.

The temple has twin hills. The Periya Malai (big hill) of Yoga Narasimha is 230 metres (750 feet) tall, and the top is reached by a flight of 1,305 steps. The temple on the top measures 61 by 46 metres and has a five-tiered gateway tower. Yoga Narasimha sits in a yogic pose in an east-facing shrine, under the Hemakoti Vimana, and has a separate shrine for his consort Amrithavalli Thayar. A Hanuman shrine, Yoga Anjaneya, stands on the second hill.
