Andal, the girl who sang the Thiruppavai, had given her heart to Ranganatha of Srirangam. In the tradition, the lord set out on a journey to Srivilliputhur to ask for her hand.திருப்பாவை பாடிய ஆண்டாள் திருவரங்க ரங்கநாதரைத் தன் மணாளனாக ஏற்றாள். மரபின்படி இறைவன் அவளைக் கேட்க ஸ்ரீவில்லிபுத்தூருக்குப் புறப்பட்டார்.
But night fell before he reached the town, so he rested on a hillock by the road. That is how the place was named Thiruthangal, the sacred place of stay.ஊரை அடைவதற்குள் இரவாகிவிட்டதால் வழியில் ஒரு சிறு குன்றில் தங்கினார். அதனால் இவ்விடம் 'திருத்தங்கல்' (புனிதமாகத் தங்கிய இடம்).

Historyவரலாறு
According to legend, Krishna's grandson Aniruddha was married at this place. The temple is mentioned in the eighth chapter of the Brahmanda Purana, which deals with the story of King Puroora Chakravarthy. Bhoothath Azhwar sang one hymn and Thirumangai Azhwar four hymns on it. Some ancient Sanskrit books call it an uthamakshetram, a place that gives the best to its devotees. The poet Divyakavi Pillai Perumal Iyengar praised the deity in verse.

Architectureகட்டிடக்கலை
The temple is 2 km from Sivakasi, on the Madurai road, built on a granite hill about 30 metres tall. A granite wall surrounds it, enclosing all the shrines and water bodies. The main gateway tower is flat in structure rather than steep. The image of Ninra Narayana stands facing east on the third tier of the tower. The temple lies on the other side of the Karunellinathar Shiva temple and can be reached from it on the hillock.
