Using this page

Work out the change when something is paid for with a note: a pencil box costs ₹36, you pay ₹50, so the change is ₹14. These sheets use whole rupees and Indian notes, so they suit Class 2 and Class 3 children learning to count on and subtract money. Choose how big the payment note is: ₹10, ₹20, ₹50 or ₹100.

Tips

  • Use real coins alongside the sheet when you can.
  • Count from the biggest coin or note down to the smallest.
  • Play shop at home: put prices on a few items and take turns giving change.
  • Talk about how money is written: dollars and cents, or pounds and pence.

Worked example

It costs ₹36 and you pay ₹50. Count up from the price: ₹36 + ₹4 = ₹40, then ₹10 more makes ₹50. The change is ₹4 + ₹10 = ₹14. Shopkeepers often count change this way.

Common mistakes

Subtracting the tens and ones the wrong way round. Count up from the price, or regroup a ten.

Giving change bigger than the note. The change is always less than the amount paid.

How to use this generator

Choose the options above the sheet: the number of questions and the settings for this kind of worksheet. Every change makes a new sheet straight away, and New worksheet gives a different set of questions with the same settings.

Each sheet has a worksheet number printed at the top. Type the same number later, or keep the page link, to print exactly the same questions and answer key again. Leave Answer key page ticked to print the answers on a second page, then press Print. Every printed page carries the makekite logo and web address.

Common questions

Why are there no paise?
The sheets use whole rupees so that children can focus on counting on and subtracting. Prices in paise are best added later, in Class 3 and above.

Are the coins real pictures?
No. They are simple labelled circles and rectangles, so children read the value rather than learn the design, and the sheets print clearly in black and white.

Can I print the same worksheet again?
Yes. Note the worksheet number printed at the top, or keep the link in your browser's address bar, which ends with that number. Entering it later gives the same questions and answers.

Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, and nothing you choose is sent anywhere: the sheets are made in your browser.
