Using this page

Work out the change when something is paid for with a note: it costs $3.65, you pay $5, so the change is $1.35. Choose Australian, New Zealand, US or UK money, or Indian rupees. Australian prices end in 0 or 5 cents, as cash is rounded to the nearest 5 cents, and New Zealand prices end in 0 cents because its smallest coin is 10 cents. Suits around Year 3 to Year 5 in Australia and Grades 2 to 4 in the US (Common Core 2.MD.C.8), but use whatever level fits the child.

Tips

  • Use real coins alongside the sheet when you can.
  • Count from the biggest coin or note down to the smallest.
  • Play shop at home: put prices on a few items and take turns giving change.
  • Talk about how money is written: dollars and cents, or pounds and pence.

Worked example

It costs $3.65 and you pay $5. Count up from the price: $3.65 + 5c = $3.70, + 30c = $4.00, + $1 = $5.00. The change is 5c + 30c + $1 = $1.35. Shopkeepers often count change this way.

Common mistakes

Subtracting the dollars and cents separately and getting $2.35. Count up, or trade a dollar for 100 cents.

Giving change bigger than the note. The change is always less than the amount paid.

How to use this generator

Choose the options above the sheet: the number of questions and the settings for this kind of worksheet. Every change makes a new sheet straight away, and New worksheet gives a different set of questions with the same settings.

Each sheet has a worksheet number printed at the top. Type the same number later, or keep the page link, to print exactly the same questions and answer key again. Leave Answer key page ticked to print the answers on a second page, then press Print. Every printed page carries the makekite logo and web address.

Common questions

Which currency should I choose?
Pick the money your child uses. The prices follow each country's coins, so Australian change can always be made with real coins.

Are the coins real pictures?
No. They are simple labelled circles and rectangles, so children read the value rather than learn the design, and the sheets print clearly in black and white.

Can I print the same worksheet again?
Yes. Note the worksheet number printed at the top, or keep the link in your browser's address bar, which ends with that number. Entering it later gives the same questions and answers.

Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, and nothing you choose is sent anywhere: the sheets are made in your browser.
