Preparing for the festival
Diwali is the festival of lights, celebrated with lamps, prayers, sweets, new clothes and time with family and friends. Make a list of the things to do over the week before, such as cleaning, shopping and cooking. The dates change each year with the lunar calendar, so check a trusted calendar for this year's date.
Keeping it safe
Lamps, candles and fireworks need care. Keep flames away from curtains, fabrics and decorations, never leave a lit lamp unattended, and keep young children and pets at a safe distance. Follow local rules on fireworks, as many areas restrict them. Plan the food in advance so that you can enjoy the day.
Ideas for the week
Many families begin a few days before the main day by cleaning and decorating. Rangoli can be made with coloured powder, rice or flower petals at the entrance. Kids can help with simple tasks such as making cards, arranging flowers or decorating the sweets box. If you live far from family, plan a video call at a time that suits everyone, and consider sharing sweets with neighbours so that the celebration reaches your community.
