Using this page
A landscape table for every person you are buying for: the gift idea, what you meant to spend, what you did spend, and ticks for bought and wrapped.
Tips
- Write the total budget at the top before you write any names, then share it out.
- Add gift ideas through the year as people mention things they would like.
- Keep receipts together in an envelope stapled to the list, in case something needs to be returned.
How to use the gift list
Write your total gift budget at the top. List everyone you are buying for in the first column, then jot down a gift idea and the amount you plan to spend. When you buy something, write the real cost in the Spent column and tick Bought. Tick Wrapped on the night you wrap, so nothing is forgotten at the back of the cupboard.
Adding up the Spent column every week or two shows early if you are drifting over budget, while there is still time to adjust.
Tips for a calmer Christmas
Buy a little each pay day from October rather than everything in December. Keep a few spare gifts, such as a nice candle or chocolates, for unexpected visitors. Check returns policies for clothes and toys, and keep receipts. For big families, suggest a Secret Santa so each adult buys one good gift instead of many small ones.
Common questions
How much should I spend on each person?
There is no rule. Decide the total you can afford first, then share it out, and remember that a small, thoughtful gift is often remembered longer than an expensive one.
