One rainy week in Madurai, a thin grey cat settled on the back steps of Nila’s school. She did not know it yet, but the cat was about to teach her what love is.

At first Nila only looked. Then, one morning, she saw tears slip down her own cheeks when the cat limped. ‘There is no lock that can hold love in,’ her grandmother said when she heard. ‘The small tears of those who love will always show it.’

She began leaving half her lunch on the step. Her friend Ravi laughed. ‘Why give your food to a cat?’ ‘People without love belong only to themselves,’ she said, remembering her grandmother. ‘People with love will give even their bones to others.’ Ravi stopped laughing, and the next day he brought a saucer of milk.

Nila’s teacher saw them and smiled. ‘They say a proper way of life is joined to love just as life is joined to the body,’ she told the class.

Soon a group of children gathered each morning. ‘Love gives birth to eagerness,’ said the teacher, ‘and eagerness gives birth to friendship, which has no limit.’

By the end of the month they had built a small cardboard house. ‘Living settled in love,’ said Nila’s grandmother when she came to see, ‘is the happiness that happy people get in this world.’

A bigger boy once tried to shoo the cat away. Nila, who was normally shy, stood between them. ‘Those who do not understand,’ said the teacher afterwards, ‘think love only helps goodness. But love also helps courage.’

Over the holidays, the school was quiet, and Nila feared for the cat. She asked the caretaker to check on it every day. ‘Without love, even doing good feels hard, like hot sun on a creature with no bones,’ she said.

When school reopened, a green shoot had grown from the dried stump near the steps, just where the cat slept. ‘A life without love is like a dried tree trying to sprout in a desert,’ Nila said softly, ‘but look, it is growing.’

Her grandmother hugged her. ‘What use are hands, feet and eyes to those who have no love? Life stands on the path of love.’ The cat purred on Nila’s lap.

மதுரையில் ஒரு மழை வாரத்தில், நிலாவின் பள்ளியின் பின்புறப் படிக்கட்டில் ஒல்லியான சாம்பல் நிறப் பூனை ஒன்று வந்து தங்கியது. அந்தப் பூனை அன்பு என்றால் என்ன என்று தனக்குக் கற்பிக்கப் போகிறது என்பது அப்போது நிலாவுக்குத் தெரியாது.

முதலில் அவள் பார்த்துக்கொண்டுதான் இருந்தாள். ஒரு நாள் காலை பூனை நொண்டியபோது தன் கன்னத்தில் கண்ணீர் வழிவதைக் கண்டாள். இதைக் கேட்ட பாட்டி சொன்னார்: ‘அன்பை அடைத்து வைக்கும் தாழ் எதுவும் இல்லை. அன்புடையவர்களின் சிறு கண்ணீரே அதைக் காட்டிக்கொடுத்துவிடும்.’ நிலா முகத்தைத் துடைத்து, சற்று வியந்தாள்.

அவள் தன் மதிய உணவில் பாதியைப் படியில் வைக்கத் தொடங்கினாள். நண்பன் ரவி சிரித்தான். ‘பூனைக்கு ஏன் உணவு தர்றே?’ ‘அன்பில்லாதவர்கள் தமக்கே உரியவர்கள். அன்புடையவர்கள் தம் எலும்பைக் கூடப் பிறருக்குத் தருவார்கள்’ என்று பாட்டியை நினைத்துச் சொன்னாள். ரவி சிரிப்பதை நிறுத்தினான். மறுநாள் ஒரு சிறு கிண்ணத்தில் பால் கொண்டுவந்தான்.

நிலாவின் ஆசிரியர் அவர்களைப் பார்த்துப் புன்னகைத்தார். ‘உடலோடு உயிர் பிணைந்திருப்பது போல, வாழ்வின் நெறி அன்போடு பிணைந்திருக்கிறது என்பார்கள்’ என்று வகுப்பில் சொன்னார். பூனையின் தண்ணீர்க் கிண்ணத்தையும் தன் பொறுப்புகளில் நிலா சேர்த்துக்கொண்டாள்.

விரைவில் ஒவ்வொரு காலையும் ஒரு சிறு குழந்தைக் கூட்டம் பூனையைப் பார்க்கக் கூடியது. ‘அன்பு ஆர்வத்தைப் பெறுகிறது. ஆர்வம் எல்லையற்ற நட்பைப் பெறுகிறது’ என்றார் ஆசிரியர். நிலா ரவியுடனும், பக்கத்து வகுப்பிலிருந்து வந்து சேர்ந்த பெண்ணுடனும் இதுவரை இல்லாத அளவு நெருக்கமானாள்.

மாத இறுதியில் அவர்கள் அட்டைப் பெட்டியில் ஒரு சிறு வீடு கட்டினர். பார்க்க வந்த பாட்டி ‘அன்பில் நிலைத்து வாழ்வதுதான், மகிழ்ச்சியான மனிதர்கள் இவ்வுலகில் அடையும் பெருமை’ என்றார்.

ஒருமுறை பெரிய பையன் ஒருவன் பூனையைத் துரத்த முயன்றான். வழக்கமாக வெட்கப்படும் நிலா அவர்களுக்கு இடையில் நின்றாள். ரவி வாயடைத்துப் போனான். பின்னர் ஆசிரியர் சொன்னார்: ‘புரியாதவர்கள் அன்பு நல்லொழுக்கத்துக்கு மட்டுமே உதவும் என்பார்கள். ஆனால் அன்பு துணிவுக்கும் துணை நிற்கும்.’

விடுமுறையில் பள்ளி அமைதியாக இருந்தது. பூனை எப்படி இருக்குமோ என்று நிலா கவலைப்பட்டாள். தினமும் பார்த்துக்கொள்ளும்படி காவலரிடம் கேட்டாள். ‘அன்பில்லாதவர்களுக்கு நன்மை செய்வதே கடினம், எலும்பில்லாத உயிரை வெயில் சுடுவது போல’ என்றாள். காவலர் புன்னகைத்து, தனக்கே பூனையின் மேல் பாசம் வந்துவிட்டதாகச் சொன்னார்.

பள்ளி மீண்டும் திறந்தபோது, பூனை படுத்த இடத்துக்கு அருகில் இருந்த உலர்ந்த மரக்கட்டையில் ஒரு பச்சை முளை துளிர்த்திருந்தது. ‘அன்பில்லாத வாழ்க்கை பாலைவனத்தில் துளிர்க்க முயலும் வற்றிய மரம் போன்றது. ஆனால் பார், இது வளர்கிறது’ என்று நிலா மெல்லச் சொன்னாள்.

பாட்டி அவளை அணைத்துக்கொண்டார். ‘அன்பில்லாதவர்களுக்குக் கை, கால், கண் எல்லாம் என்ன பயன்? வாழ்க்கை அன்பின் வழியில்தான் நிற்கிறது.’ பூனை நிலாவின் மடியில் மெதுவாகக் கரகரத்தது.
