தீயார்சொல் கேட்பதுவும் தீதே தீயார்
குணங்கள் உரைப்பதுவும் தீதே; அவரோடு
இணங்கி இருப்பதுவும் தீது
பொருள்: தீயவரைக் காண்பதும், அவர் சொல்லைக் கேட்பதும், அவர் குணங்களைப் பேசுவதும், அவரோடு இணைந்திருப்பதும் தீது.
Meaning: It is harmful to see wicked people, to listen to their words, to speak of their qualities or to keep their company.
The Wrong Crowd
Sam began hanging around with a group who skipped class and mocked teachers. At first it felt exciting. Soon his marks dropped and he felt uneasy. An older cousin told him gently that we become like the people we stay close to. Sam went back to his old friends, worked hard, and felt like himself again.

எல்லார்க்கும் பெய்யும் மழை
பொருள்: நெல்லுக்கு இறைத்த நீர் புல்லுக்கும் பாயும்; அதுபோல் ஒரு நல்லவர் இருந்தால் அவர் பொருட்டு எல்லாருக்கும் மழை பெய்யும்.
Meaning: Water poured for the rice flows to the grass as well. In the same way, if even one good person lives in a place, the rain falls for everyone because of them.
The Kind Doctor
In a small town, one doctor treated everyone, rich or poor, without a fuss. When she opened her clinic on Sundays, the whole town felt looked after. People said that her kindness lifted the entire community. Even the shopkeepers who had never been ill told stories about her. One good person, the old saying goes, is enough to bless a whole place.
அன்பான மருத்துவர்

பொருள்: முன்பு நெல் விளைவித்த அரிசியும், உமி நீங்கினால் முளைக்காது; ஆற்றல் உடையவரும் அளவில்லாமல் செயலை ஏற்கலாகாது.
Meaning: Even rice that once sprouted will not grow once the husk is gone; even the able should not take on tasks without limit.
The Overloaded Schoolbag
Leo promised to join the band, the chess club, the swimming team and the school play all in one term. By the middle of the term, he was exhausted and behind in his homework. His teacher said that being capable is not the same as having no limits. Leo chose two activities he truly enjoyed, did them well, and felt happy again.

பொருள்: தாழைக்கு மடல் பெரிது ஆனால் மணம் மட்டுமே இனிது; உடல் சிறியவர் என்று யாரையும் இகழ வேண்டாம்; கடல் பெரிது ஆனால் குடிக்க உதவாது, அதன் அருகே உள்ள சிறு ஊற்று குடிநீர் தரும்.
Meaning: The screw-pine's leaf is large, but only its fragrance is sweet. Do not look down on anyone for being small: the sea is huge but undrinkable, while a little spring beside it gives fresh water.
The Little Spring
On a beach holiday, Anya's family ran out of water. The wide sea was no use, but a small spring flowed between the rocks, clear and cool. Anya's father said that size does not decide worth. At school, Anya remembered this and invited the smallest, quietest girl in class to her group. The girl turned out to be the best storyteller of all.
சிறிய ஊற்று

கவையாகிக் கொம்பாகிக் காட்டகத்தே நிற்கும்
அவையல்ல நல்ல மரங்கள் அவைநடுவே
நீட்டோ லை வாசியா நின்றான் குறிப்பறிய
மாட்டாதவன் நன்மரம்
பொருள்: காட்டில் கிளைகளோடு நிற்கும் மரங்கள் மட்டும் நல்ல மரங்கள் அல்ல; ஓலையைப் படித்து அதன் குறிப்பை அறிபவரே உண்மையில் நல்ல மரம் (கற்றவரைக் குறிக்கிறது; உரையாளர்கள் இதை வேறு விதமாகவும் விளக்குவர்).
Meaning: Not every tall, branching tree in the forest is truly a good tree; the one who can read a palm-leaf letter and understand its hidden meaning is the real treasure. Commentators explain this verse in several ways.
The Careful Reader
Dhruv could read quickly, but he often missed the meaning. His teacher asked him to read a short note and say what the writer felt. He found it hard. Together they read slowly and talked about each clue. By the end of the term, Dhruv could understand not just words but moods, and his stories became thoughtful and kind.
கவனமாக வாசிப்பவன்

கல்லாதான் கற்ற கவி
பொருள்: காட்டு மயில் ஆடுவதைப் பார்த்த வான்கோழி தானும் அது போலத் தன் சிறகை விரித்து ஆடுவது போல், கல்லாதவன் கவி பாடுவான்.
Meaning: A turkey that sees a forest peacock dance spreads its own plain feathers and tries to dance too, just like an unlearned person trying to write poetry.
The Copycat Turkey
At the farm, a turkey watched a peacock display his tail and tried to copy him. The farm children laughed, not unkindly. The farmer's daughter said that it is lovely to try, but copying without learning leads nowhere. She taught the turkey's keeper how to care for it, and the turkey's own gentle gobble became the farm's favourite sound.
நகலெடுத்த வான்கோழி
பண்ணையில் ஒரு வான்கோழி, மயில் தன் தோகையை விரித்து ஆடுவதைப் பார்த்து அதைப் போல் செய்ய முயன்றது. பண்ணையின் குழந்தைகள் தீய எண்ணமின்றிச் சிரித்தார்கள். முயற்சி செய்வது அழகுதான், ஆனால் கற்காமல் நகலெடுப்பது எங்கும் கொண்டுசெல்லாது என்று விவசாயியின் மகள் சொன்னாள். அவள் வான்கோழியைப் பராமரிப்பவருக்கு அதைக் கவனிக்கும் முறையைக் கற்றுக் கொடுத்தாள். வான்கோழியின் சொந்த மென்மையான குரல் பண்ணையின் எல்லோருக்கும் பிடித்த ஒலியாக மாறியது.

ஆங்கதனுக்கு ஆகாரம் ஆனால்போல் பாங்கறியாப்
புல்லறி வாளர்க்குச் செய்த உபகாரம்
கல்லின்மேல் இட்ட கலம்
பொருள்: புலியின் நோயைத் தீர்த்த வைத்தியன் அதற்கு உணவாகிவிட்டதைப் போல, புரிந்து கொள்ளாத மூடர்களுக்குச் செய்த உதவி கல்மேல் வைத்த பாத்திரம் போல் வீணாகும் (யாருக்கு உதவுவது என்று அறிந்து செய்ய வேண்டும்).
Meaning: Like a healer who cured a tiger and was eaten by it, help given to those who cannot understand is wasted, like a pot placed on a stone. We should know whom we are helping.
Wise Kindness
Mira lent her best pencils to a classmate who lost them every time. After the third time, she decided to keep them and gave him a cheap pencil instead. She was still kind, but wiser. Her teacher said that kindness works best when joined with good sense. Mira kept helping others, but she learned to look carefully at what her help would do.

பொருள்: அடக்கமுடையவரை அறிவில்லாதவர் என்று எண்ணி அவமதிக்க வேண்டாம்; மீன் வரும் வரை கொக்கு அமைதியாகக் காத்திருப்பது போல், அவர் தக்க நேரத்திற்காகக் காத்திருக்கிறார்.
Meaning: Do not think that quiet, modest people lack wisdom. Like a heron that waits patiently until the right fish comes, they are waiting for the right moment.
The Heron by the Pond
Early one morning, Vikram watched a heron stand perfectly still by the pond for a long time. Suddenly, with a swift motion, it caught a fish. His grandmother said that quiet people are often like that: watching, learning and ready. The next day at school, Vikram listened to the shy boy in his class, and found he had very clever ideas.
