Meaning: Those who bow to the feet of the elephant-faced Ganesha with flowers are said to gain the gift of speech, a good mind, good fortune and a body that does not weaken.
Flowers for Ganesha
Every Wednesday, Kavya picked a few flowers from the garden and placed them in front of the small Ganesha statue at home. She asked for good words, a kind mind and a strong body. Her grandmother said that the flowers were also a way of saying thank you. Kavya noticed that the habit made her days start gently, and she kept it up all year.

Meaning: When you do a kindness, do not wonder when it will be repaid. The coconut palm drinks water at its roots and later gives it back, sweet, from its crown.
The Coconut Palm
Mr Rao planted a coconut sapling behind his house and watered it daily for years. He did not know whether he would still be around when it bore fruit. One bright morning, he saw the first green coconuts and gave one to a thirsty passer-by. His neighbour smiled and said that a good deed, like a palm, takes time but always gives back.

Meaning: A kindness to a good person is like writing on stone and lasts; a kindness to a hard-hearted person is like writing on water and vanishes.
Writing on Stone
Priya helped a neighbour whose house flooded, and the neighbour remembered it for years and brought her flowers every festival. Another time, Priya lent a book to a classmate who never even said thank you. Her teacher showed her two slates, one carved and one wet. She said that we should still be kind to everyone, but we should be glad when kindness lands where it is valued.

Meaning: When poverty comes in youth, even pleasant things lose their joy, and beauty without anyone to appreciate it is like a flower that blooms on an unlucky day. This reflects the poet's own time.
The Unseen Flower
Out in the bush, a wildflower bloomed in a place where nobody walked. Its petals were perfect, but for weeks no one saw it. Then a student on a school walk noticed it, took a photo and showed the class. Their teacher said that beauty and talent need to be seen, and that we should notice the quiet things around us and tell people they are lovely.

Meaning: Milk does not lose its taste when boiled, and a conch gives whiteness even when burned. In the same way, noble people stay noble even when they lose everything, while those who are not true friends do not become friends however much we try.
The White Conch
When a flood destroyed the potter's shop, he lost everything he owned. He did not complain or lose his kind manner. He started again by making a small pot, then another. The neighbours came to help him, because they remembered his good heart. He said, a conch stays white even in the fire, and so does a good name.

Meaning: No matter how hard you try, tasks are completed only when their time comes, just as even tall trees fruit only in season.
The Mango Season
Lina watered the mango tree every day, but it stayed bare. She felt impatient. Her grandfather said that trees fruit in their own season, and that effort is never wasted, because it makes the fruit sweet. In summer, the tree filled with golden mangoes. Lina sat in its shade and enjoyed one, smiling at how patience had paid off.

Meaning: Brave people who are ready to give their lives do not bow to their enemies, just as a stone pillar will break but never bend.
The Stone Pillar
When the bully demanded his lunch money, little Hari said no, calmly and clearly. He stood tall though his knees shook. Another boy joined him, then another. The bully walked away. Hari's teacher later said that real courage is not being fearless but standing firm for what is right, like a pillar that does not bend in the wind.

Meaning: A water lily grows as tall as the water is deep; knowledge is as much as one has studied; fortune is as much as past effort allows; and character, say some, is shaped by one's upbringing, though commentators read this last part in different ways.
The Water Lily
At the pond, Mai noticed that the lily stems were long where the water was deep and short where it was shallow. Her teacher said that learning works the same way: the more you read and practise, the taller you grow. Mai decided to read a little every night and watched her own knowledge grow.

Meaning: It is good to see good people, to hear their words, to speak of their qualities and to stay in their company.
Good Company
Tom joined a library club where the older members were kind and wise. He listened to their stories, read the books they loved and soon found himself speaking more gently. His mother noticed the change. She said that time spent with good people is like walking in the sun: you come home warm without even trying.
