The serpent's penance and the lady of Varamangai
The temple tells of two kinds of devotion. In one story, the serpent Adisesha prayed at this place for many years, asking that the lord rest upon him. Vishnu was pleased and lay upon the serpent. In another, the goddess Lakshmi was born here as Srivaramangai, the lady of blessings, and that is how the place came to be known as Varangunamangai. Garuda, the eagle-mount of the lord, also did penance here and was granted a wish. Devotees call the lord Thotadrinathar, the lord of the hill that is surrounded by water. Most Vishnu temples prefer decoration to bathing, but here, the lord is bathed with oil daily at about seven in the morning, a rare custom that visitors come to see.

Historyவரலாறு
The earliest inscription in the temple is from 1236, from the period of Sundara Pandya I. Others include one from 1275 by Kulasekara I about tax collection, an inscription from 1284 on the eastern tower, a gift of Vikrama Pandya III in 1299, and a gift of money in 1305 to sculpt an image of Sadagopar. The temple is one of the eight 'Swayambu Kshetrams' of Vishnu, where the deity is believed to have manifested on his own. The Vanamamalai Mutt has a head, called the Jeeyar, who is associated with the temple. Nammazhwar sang ten hymns about it.

Architectureகட்டிடக்கலை
The temple has a large five-tiered gateway tower and a large compound with two enclosures, and various pillared halls. Vanamamalai Perumal is seated on Adisesha, with Sridevi and Bhoodevi on either side. The shrine is in line with the gateway tower and is approached through the Ardha Mandapa and Maha Mandapa. The goddess has her shrine in the second enclosure.
