The storyகதை
The sage Suthapava was bathing in the spring called Nupura Ganga on the Alagar hill when the sage Durvasa passed by. Suthapava did not notice him, and Durvasa became upset.சுதபா முனிவர் அழகர் மலை நூபுர கங்கை ஊற்றில் நீராடும்போது துர்வாசர் கடந்து சென்றார். சுதபா கவனிக்கவில்லை; துர்வாசர் வருந்தினார்.
Suthapava became a frog sage, known as Manduka Maharishi, and prayed on the banks of the Vaigai river at Thenur.சுதபா 'மண்டூக மகரிஷி' என்ற தவளை முனிவராகி, தேனூரில் வைகை ஆற்றங்கரையில் வேண்டினார்.
Pleased with his devotion, the lord came down from his hill to free him. The sage who became a frog
The sage Suthapava was bathing in the spring called Nupura Ganga on the Alagar hill when the sage Durvasa passed by. Suthapava did not notice him, and Durvasa was offended. In his anger he cursed Suthapava to become a frog until the lord redeemed him. The sage, now a frog, was known as Manduka Maharishi, the frog sage. He prayed and did penance on the banks of the Vaigai river at Thenur. Pleased with his devotion, the lord came down from his hill to free him. Even now, the tradition says, Kallazhagar travels from the hill every year to the Vaigai at Thenur, and the whole city comes out to see him enter the river. Alongside this, the poet-saint Andal is said to have promised the lord a hundred pots of butter and sweet rice, a promise remembered here.

Several water bodies are linked to the temple, including those named after the Pandavas, Hanuman, Uttara Narayana and Garuda. Ablution of the deity is done with waters from these tanks, and water from other sources is believed to be unsuitable. The Tamil list gives a very high count of hymns for this place, so it was clearly beloved of many Azhwars.

Architectureகட்டிடக்கலை
The temple covers about two acres and has a seven-tiered gateway tower and huge granite walls. The central shrine houses the standing image of the presiding deity with Sridevi and Bhudevi. There are two life-size images of Narasimha, one holding the demon Hiranya and the other slaying him. Separate shrines honour Sundaravalli Nachiyar, Andal, Sudarshana and Yoga Narasimha. The temple also contains some rare Vijayanagara paintings.
