Drainage: The Rivers of India: Class 9 Study Guide
Rivers carry water, soil and people's lives across India. Where they begin shapes how they flow.
Drainage means the river system of an area. A river with all its tributaries is a river system, and the land that supplies it with water is its drainage basin. A high land that separates two basins is a water divide.
India's rivers fall into two main groups: the Himalayan rivers and the Peninsular rivers.
Himalayan and Peninsular rivers
| Himalayan rivers | Peninsular rivers | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Mountains with snow and glaciers | Plateau; fed mostly by rain |
| Flow | Throughout the year | Seasonal; many dry up in summer |
| Examples | Indus, Ganga, Brahmaputra | Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada |
| Valley | Deep gorges and long courses | Shorter, shallower valleys |
Main rivers
The Ganga rises at the Gangotri glacier and flows into the Bay of Bengal. The Brahmaputra rises in Tibet and flows through Assam. Most Peninsular rivers, such as the Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri, flow east into the Bay of Bengal. The Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea through rift valleys. A river meeting the sea may form a delta or an estuary.
Lakes and the use of rivers
Lakes include freshwater ones, like Dal Lake, and salt-water ones, like Chilika. Rivers give water for farming, drinking and power, and carry boats. They are also threatened by pollution, so projects such as river-cleaning programmes matter.
Canals bring water to fields.
Dams make hydroelectricity.
Rivers carry boats and goods.
Worked examples and common mistakes
Example: Which river is born in Tibet and flows through Assam? The Brahmaputra. Example: Why do Himalayan rivers flow all year? They are fed by melting snow as well as rain. Common mistakes: thinking that all Peninsular rivers flow east, and mixing up a delta with an estuary.
Check your understanding: model answers
1. The Ganga and the Brahmaputra. 2. They depend on rainfall. 3. Land formed where a river drops its silt near the sea.
