CLASS 9 ยท HUMANITIESDemocracy, the Constitution and Rights๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ๐Ÿ“œโš–๏ธ

Democracy is a form of government in which the people choose their rulers, and the rulers must follow the rules and respect rights. Its key features are free and fair elections, one person one vote, rule of law and rights for all citizens.

India's Constitution was drafted by the Constituent Assembly, with Dr B. R. Ambedkar chairing the Drafting Committee. It was adopted on 26 November 1949 and came into force on 26 January 1950. The Preamble describes India as a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic, and promises justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.

Rights and duties

Rights come with duties. Citizens should follow the Constitution, respect the flag and anthem, protect public property and the environment and promote harmony. A right for one person means a duty for others to respect it. The Right to Education guarantees free and compulsory education for children aged 6 to 14.

Other countries

South Africa's democracy ended apartheid, which had separated people by race, and its new Constitution protects equality. Learning from other countries shows how a constitution can be a turning point for a nation.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: Write a class charter of rights and duties and vote on it.

Worked examples and common mistakes

Example: Which right lets you go to the Supreme Court if a right is denied? The right to constitutional remedies. Example: Which date did the Constitution come into force? 26 January 1950. Common mistakes: thinking that rights are unlimited (they have reasonable limits to protect others), and mixing up the date of adoption with the date it came into force.
