Profit, Loss and Discount in Rupees: Class 5 Study Guide

Shopkeepers buy at one price and sell at another. The difference is profit or loss.

CLASS 5 ยท MATHSProfit, Loss and Discount in Rupeesโ‚น๐Ÿ“ˆ๐Ÿ“‰๐Ÿท๏ธ

The cost price (CP) is what a shopkeeper pays to buy something. The selling price (SP) is what the customer pays. If SP is more than CP, there is a profit. If SP is less than CP, there is a loss.

A discount is an amount taken off the marked price. The price the customer pays is the marked price minus the discount.

Formulas

IdeaHow to find it
ProfitSP โˆ’ CP (when SP is more)
LossCP โˆ’ SP (when CP is more)
DiscountMarked price โˆ’ selling price
Price after a discountMarked price โˆ’ discount

Worked example

A shopkeeper buys a bag for โ‚น400 and sells it for โ‚น460. Profit = 460 โˆ’ 400 = โ‚น60. Another shopkeeper buys a toy for โ‚น250 and sells it for โ‚น210. Loss = 250 โˆ’ 210 = โ‚น40. A shirt marked at โ‚น800 has a discount of โ‚น120. Price paid = 800 โˆ’ 120 = โ‚น680.

1
Write CP and SP

Which is bigger?

2
Subtract the smaller from the larger

That gives profit or loss.

3
Name it

Profit if SP is bigger, loss if CP is bigger.

4
Write the unit

In rupees.

Discount in percent

A discount can be given as a percentage. 10% of โ‚น500 is โ‚น50, because 10% means 10 out of every 100, or one tenth. So a โ‚น500 jacket at 10% off costs 500 โˆ’ 50 = โ‚น450. 20% is two tenths, so 20% of โ‚น500 is โ‚น100.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: Check a sale poster in a shop and work out the price after the discount.

Worked examples and common mistakes

Example: CP โ‚น90, SP โ‚น110. Profit = โ‚น20. Example: Marked โ‚น250 with 10% discount. Discount = โ‚น25, price = โ‚น225. Common mistakes: mixing up CP and SP, writing both profit and loss, and subtracting the percentage number straight from the price (โ‚น500 โˆ’ 10 is not the answer). Convert the percentage to rupees first.

Check your understanding: model answers

1. โ‚น15. 2. A loss of โ‚น30. 3. โ‚น80.
