Festivals and Harvests of India: Class 4 Study Guide
Many festivals thank nature for the harvest, mark a season or remember an event. People celebrate in different ways.
India has many festivals through the year. Several are harvest festivals, when farmers thank nature for the crop. Pongal in Tamil Nadu falls in January and is named after the sweet dish made from new rice. Baisakhi in Punjab in April marks the wheat harvest. Bihu in Assam and Onam in Kerala also celebrate the season and the harvest.
Other festivals, such as Diwali, Holi, Eid, Christmas and Gurpurab, are celebrated by different communities. People often join in each other's celebrations and share food and greetings.
Festivals and their seasons
Dates differ every year because many festivals follow lunar calendars. The months below are only a guide.
| Festival | Where it is well known | About when |
|---|---|---|
| Pongal | Tamil Nadu | January |
| Lohri and Makar Sankranti | Punjab and many states | January |
| Holi | North and many states | March |
| Baisakhi | Punjab | April |
| Bihu | Assam | April and January |
| Onam | Kerala | August or September |
| Diwali | Across India | October or November |
| Christmas | Across India | 25 December |
Why do we celebrate?
Festivals bring families and neighbours together. They remind us to be thankful, to share and to be kind. Some festivals have special food, music, dance and clothes. They also teach children stories from our past.
Harvest, season or story.
Food, lamps, colours.
Sweets and greetings.
Be careful with fire and noise.
Celebrating safely and kindly
Use lamps and diyas with an adult nearby. Keep crackers away from children and animals, since loud noise and smoke can harm both. Use natural colours at Holi and clean up afterwards. Do not waste food.
