Rupees, Bills and Change: Class 3 Study Guide
A bill shows what we bought and what we must pay. The change is what the shopkeeper gives back.
When we buy things, a shopkeeper writes or prints a bill. It lists each item with its price and the total. If we pay with more than the total, we get change.
In Class 3, children add prices in rupees and paise, for example โน12.50 + โน7.25, and subtract to find the change. 100 paise make โน1.
A shopping bill
| Item | Quantity | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Notebook | 2 | โน60.00 |
| Pencil | 5 | โน25.00 |
| Eraser | 1 | โน7.50 |
| Total | โน92.50 |
Finding the change
To find the change, subtract the total from the money paid. If the bill is โน92.50 and you pay with โน100, the change is โน100 โ โน92.50 = โน7.50. Shopkeepers often count on instead: from 92.50 add 50 paise to reach โน93, then โน7 more to reach โน100. The change is โน7.50.
To get the total.
Which note or coin.
From the total to the amount paid.
Total + change = money paid.
Adding rupees and paise
Line up the dots (decimal points) so that paise are under paise and rupees under rupees. Add the paise first. If they make 100 or more, carry 1 rupee. Example: โน12.50 + โน7.25 = โน19.75.
Worked examples and common mistakes
Example: Two pens cost โน15 each and a ruler costs โน10. Total = 15 + 15 + 10 = โน40. Paying with โน50 gives โน10 change. Common mistakes: not lining up the decimal points, and forgetting to add the price twice when buying two of an item. Write the quantity next to each price.
