Planning two weeks

Write the days on the left and fill in a mix of outings, free play, quiet time and chores. Check the opening times, costs and booking requirements for outings, and list a wet-weather option for each outdoor plan. Spread bigger outings across the holidays, so that children are not overtired.

Sharing the load

If more than one adult is looking after the children, note who is responsible each day, and who is on call for pick-ups. Rotate playdates with other families, and add free local events from the library and council. Keep a list of low-cost ideas for the days when plans fall through.

Ideas to fill the days

Mix big and small days: one outing, then a quiet day at home. Ideas that cost little include a picnic at the park, a library visit, a backyard campout, a board game tournament, baking, a bike ride, a scavenger hunt, a movie afternoon at home and a visit to a grandparent. Ask each child to choose one activity for the planner so that everyone looks forward to something. Leave a few days blank for rest, friends and surprises, and tick off the plans as you go.

Using the planner

Print the planner at the start of the holidays and fill in the fixed commitments first, such as work days, camps, appointments and visits. Then add the outings and free days around them. Use the notes column for costs, booking details and what to bring. Tick off each day as it is done, and keep the page as a record of the holidays, which makes planning the next break easier. Ask the children what they enjoyed most, and add those ideas next time.
