Writing Letters, Notices and Paragraphs: Class 9 Study Guide
Good writing follows a format. Learn the layout and your marks and clarity improve.
Writing tasks in Class 9 include letters, notices, paragraphs and articles. Each has a set layout. Examiners look at format, content, accuracy and style.
Plan before you write: who is the reader, what is the purpose, and what must be included?
Formats at a glance
| Type | Parts | Tone |
|---|---|---|
| Formal letter | Sender's address, date, receiver's address, subject, salutation (Sir/Madam), body, 'Yours faithfully', name | Polite and exact |
| Informal letter | Address, date, 'Dear ...', body, 'Yours lovingly/affectionately', name | Friendly |
| Notice | Name of the organisation, the word NOTICE, date, heading, details (what, when, where), name and post of the writer | Short and clear, within about 50 words |
| Paragraph | Topic sentence, supporting sentences, closing sentence | Focused on one idea |
Tips for each
Use 'Yours faithfully' if you began with 'Sir/Madam' and 'Yours sincerely' if you used a name. In a notice, give the date, time and place of the event and a contact. In a paragraph, begin with the main idea and keep every sentence on that idea. Check spelling, capital letters and full stops, and keep to the word limit.
Worked examples and common mistakes
Example: A notice: SCHOOL NOTICE, 12 August. Inter-house quiz. All students of Class 9 are invited to the hall on Friday, 16 August, at 10 a.m. Name, Secretary, Quiz Club. Common mistakes: leaving out the date or subject line, writing a notice that is too long, and mixing formal and informal language in the same letter.
