Improvement in Food Resources: Class 9 Study Guide

India must grow enough food for a large population. Better methods improve yields without harming the land.

Crops are grouped by season. Kharif crops are sown with the monsoon in June and harvested in October. They include paddy (rice), maize and soybean. Rabi crops are sown in winter in November and harvested in April. They include wheat, gram, peas and mustard.

To raise yields, farmers choose improved varieties, use manure and fertilisers, irrigate fields, protect crops from weeds, insects and diseases and store grain well.

Improving crop yield

MethodWhat it does
Improved seedsHigher yield and resistance to disease
ManureOrganic matter that improves soil structure
FertilisersSupply nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium
Crop rotationGrows different crops in turn, so the soil keeps its nutrients
IntercroppingTwo crops grown together in rows
IrrigationGives water by canals, wells and drip systems

Animal husbandry

Cattle farming gives milk and work animals, and good breeds, feed, shelter and vaccination matter. Poultry gives eggs and meat. Fisheries use sea and fresh water, and fish farming (aquaculture) raises fish in ponds. Bee-keeping gives honey and wax, and bees also help pollinate flowers.

1
Choose a good breed

For milk, eggs or honey.

2
Give clean feed and water

And shelter.

3
Protect from disease

Vaccinate.

4
Keep records

Of yield and health.

Caring for the land

Too much fertiliser and pesticide can pollute water and harm useful insects. Organic manure, crop rotation and careful water use help keep soil fertile for the future. Storing grain dry and clean prevents losses from pests and mould.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: Grow a few bean seedlings in two pots, one with compost, and compare them over two weeks.

Worked examples and common mistakes

Example: Is wheat a kharif or rabi crop? Rabi. Example: Which crop is sown with the monsoon? Paddy. Common mistakes: mixing up kharif and rabi, thinking that more fertiliser always means more yield, and forgetting that crops need clean water too.

Check your understanding: model answers

1. For example wheat and gram. 2. Growing two crops together in separate rows. 3. It can pollute water and harm the soil and useful insects.

โœจ Key Takeaways

  • Kharif crops are sown in the monsoon and rabi crops in winter.
  • Manure and fertilisers add nutrients.
  • Crop rotation and intercropping protect the soil.
  • Animal husbandry includes cattle, poultry, fish and bees.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Questions for Discussion & Reflection

  • Name two rabi crops.
  • What is intercropping?
  • Why is too much fertiliser a problem?
