Electricity and Circuits: Class 6 Study Guide

An electric circuit is a complete path for current. Conductors let current flow and insulators do not.

CLASS 6 ยท SCIENCEElectricity and Circuitsโšก๐Ÿ”Œ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿชซ

An electric cell has two terminals, positive and negative. A bulb has a thin wire, the filament, that glows when current flows through it. A switch opens or closes the path. For the bulb to light, the circuit must be closed: cell, wires, bulb and switch must form a complete loop.

If the switch is open or a wire is loose, the circuit is open and no current flows.

Conductors and insulators

Materials that let electric current pass are conductors, and materials that do not are insulators. Metals such as copper and aluminium are conductors, so wires are made of them, and graphite also conducts. Plastic, rubber, wood, glass and dry cloth are insulators, so wires are covered with plastic.

Drawing a circuit

In a circuit diagram we use symbols: a cell, a bulb, a switch, wires. A good drawing shows a closed loop. If the bulb does not light, check the cell, the loose wires, a fused filament and the switch.

1
Connect the cell to the bulb

With wires.

2
Add a switch in the loop

To open and close it.

3
Close the switch

The bulb should glow.

4
Test materials

Place them in the gap.

Safety

Never touch a switch or plug with wet hands. Never put anything into a socket. Do not use damaged wires. Use only cells for classroom experiments, and never experiment with mains electricity. Keep electrical items away from water.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: Test five household objects in a circuit with a cell and bulb, and record which conduct.

Worked examples and common mistakes

Example: Does a bulb light if the switch is off? No, the circuit is open. Example: Is a rubber eraser a conductor? No, an insulator. Common mistakes: thinking that current flows through only one wire, and thinking that insulators are useless. They protect us from shocks.

Check your understanding: model answers

1. Plastic is an insulator, so it stops shocks. 2. For example copper and iron. 3. It opens and closes the circuit.

โœจ Key Takeaways

  • A bulb lights only in a closed circuit.
  • Conductors let current pass; insulators do not.
  • Metals conduct and plastics insulate.
  • Electricity is dangerous; follow safety rules.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Questions for Discussion & Reflection

  • Why is the wire of a plug covered in plastic?
  • Name two conductors.
  • What does a switch do?
