Using this page

Fill the gaps in counting patterns: count by 2s, 5s and 10s, by 3s and 4s, up to 9s, or by 25s, 50s and 100s, forwards or backwards. The Common Core's Grade 2 standard asks for skip-counting by 5s, 10s and 100s, and skip counting leads straight into the times tables. Suits around Year 1 and Year 2 in Australia and Grade 2 in the US (Common Core 2.NBT.A.2), but use whatever level fits the child.

Tips

  • Show the working, even when the answer seems obvious; it makes mistakes easy to spot.
  • Check each answer: put it back into an equation, or estimate before working out.
  • Start with the easier setting and move up once most answers are right.
  • Mix one older sheet into each week so earlier skills stay fresh.

Worked example

15, 20, 25, __, 35, __. Each number is 5 more than the one before, so the gaps are 30 and 40. When counting backwards, such as 90, 80, 70, __, take away the step each time: the gap is 60.

Common mistakes

Working out the step from the first two numbers without checking. Make sure the rule works all the way along.

Switching from adding to subtracting halfway through a backwards pattern.

How to use this generator

Choose the options above the sheet: the number of questions and the settings for this kind of worksheet. Every change makes a new sheet straight away, and New worksheet gives a different set of questions with the same settings.

Each sheet has a worksheet number printed at the top. Type the same number later, or keep the page link, to print exactly the same questions and answer key again. Leave Answer key page ticked to print the answers on a second page, then press Print. Every printed page carries the makekite logo and web address.

Common questions

How does skip counting help with times tables?
Counting by 3s gives 3, 6, 9, 12, the 3 times table. Children who can skip count can find any fact by counting on.

Can I make the sheet harder?
Yes. Use the options above the sheet: more digits, a harder level, brackets or negative numbers where they are offered.

Can I print the same worksheet again?
Yes. Note the worksheet number printed at the top, or keep the link in your browser's address bar, which ends with that number. Entering it later gives the same questions and answers.

Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, and nothing you choose is sent anywhere: the sheets are made in your browser.
