Adding and Subtracting Negative Numbers Worksheets

Free printable adding and subtracting negative numbers worksheets with answer keys. Add and subtract integers, such as −7 + 3 and 4 − (−6).

Using this page

Add and subtract integers, such as −7 + 3 and 4 − (−6). Choose numbers from −10 to 10, −20 to 20 or −50 to 50. Negative numbers in brackets show where a minus sign belongs to the number. The Common Core's Grade 7 standard covers adding and subtracting rational numbers on a number line. Suits around Year 7 in Australia and Grade 7 in the US (Common Core 7.NS.A.1), but use whatever level fits the child.

Tips

  • Show the working, even when the answer seems obvious; it makes mistakes easy to spot.
  • Check each answer: put it back into an equation, or estimate before working out.
  • Start with the easier setting and move up once most answers are right.
  • Mix one older sheet into each week so earlier skills stay fresh.

Worked example

4 − (−6). Subtracting a negative is the same as adding the positive: 4 + 6 = 10. For −7 + 3, start at −7 on a number line and move 3 to the right: −4.

Common mistakes

Treating 4 − (−6) as 4 − 6 = −2. Two minus signs together become a plus.

Moving the wrong way on the number line. Adding moves right; subtracting moves left.

How to use this generator

Choose the options above the sheet: the number of questions and the settings for this kind of worksheet. Every change makes a new sheet straight away, and New worksheet gives a different set of questions with the same settings.

Each sheet has a worksheet number printed at the top. Type the same number later, or keep the page link, to print exactly the same questions and answer key again. Leave Answer key page ticked to print the answers on a second page, then press Print. Every printed page carries the makekite logo and web address.

Common questions

Why are some numbers in brackets?
Brackets keep the negative sign with its number, so 4 − (−6) cannot be misread as 4 − 6.

Can I make the sheet harder?
Yes. Use the options above the sheet: more digits, a harder level, brackets or negative numbers where they are offered.

Can I print the same worksheet again?
Yes. Note the worksheet number printed at the top, or keep the link in your browser's address bar, which ends with that number. Entering it later gives the same questions and answers.

Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, and nothing you choose is sent anywhere: the sheets are made in your browser.
