Rounding Worksheets

Free printable rounding worksheets with answer keys. Round whole numbers to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000, or a mix of all three.

Using this page

Round whole numbers to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000, or a mix of all three. Grade 3 in the Common Core rounds to the nearest 10 or 100, and Grade 4 rounds multi-digit numbers to any place. Rounding is the basis of estimation, which is the best way to check a written calculation. Suits around Year 3 to Year 5 in Australia and Grades 3 and 4 in the US (Common Core 3.NBT.A.1 and 4.NBT.A.3), but use whatever level fits the child.

Tips

  • Show the working, even when the answer seems obvious; it makes mistakes easy to spot.
  • Check each answer: put it back into an equation, or estimate before working out.
  • Start with the easier setting and move up once most answers are right.
  • Mix one older sheet into each week so earlier skills stay fresh.

Worked example

Round 3,468 to the nearest 100. It lies between 3,400 and 3,500. Look at the tens digit, 6: that is 5 or more, so round up. 3,468 rounds to 3,500. To the nearest 10 it is 3,470, and to the nearest 1000 it is 3,000.

Common mistakes

Looking at the wrong digit. To round to the nearest 100, look at the tens digit.

Rounding 3,468 to 3,500 and then writing 35, losing the place value.

How to use this generator

Choose the options above the sheet: the number of questions and the settings for this kind of worksheet. Every change makes a new sheet straight away, and New worksheet gives a different set of questions with the same settings.

Each sheet has a worksheet number printed at the top. Type the same number later, or keep the page link, to print exactly the same questions and answer key again. Leave Answer key page ticked to print the answers on a second page, then press Print. Every printed page carries the makekite logo and web address.

Common questions

What happens with exactly 5?
These sheets use the usual school rule: 5 or more rounds up, so 250 rounds to 300 to the nearest hundred.

Can I make the sheet harder?
Yes. Use the options above the sheet: more digits, a harder level, brackets or negative numbers where they are offered.

Can I print the same worksheet again?
Yes. Note the worksheet number printed at the top, or keep the link in your browser's address bar, which ends with that number. Entering it later gives the same questions and answers.

Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, and nothing you choose is sent anywhere: the sheets are made in your browser.
