Classroom Noise Meter

A sound level meter for the classroom with a big face that changes from calm to worried as the room gets louder, a coloured bar and a Too loud level you set with the class. It counts how many times the room went over the level.

How to use this page

  1. Press Start and allow the browser to use the microphone.
  2. Set the Too loud level with the slider: the face and the bar turn amber as the room gets louder and red above the level.
  3. Adjust the sensitivity for the size of the room and how far the device is from the class.
  4. Press Full screen so the class can see the face from their desks.

About this classroom tool

A noise meter turns 'use your inside voices' into something students can see for themselves. Set the level together, such as partner voices for group work or silence for reading, and let the face do the reminding. The meter uses your device's microphone to measure loudness only: no sound is recorded, stored or sent anywhere. Press Stop when you are done to release the microphone.

Tips

Common questions

Is the sound recorded?
No. The meter reads only the loudness on your device, many times a second, and nothing is recorded, stored or sent anywhere.

Why does the browser ask for the microphone?
The meter needs the microphone to hear the room. You can block it at any time in the browser settings.

Everything on this page is made in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere. It works on a laptop, an interactive whiteboard or a projector, and Full screen makes it easy to see from the back of the room. For more, see the worksheets and printable paper.
