Plants and Animals Around Us: Class 1 Study Guide

Plants and animals are living things. They need food, water and air to grow.

CLASS 1 · EVSPlants and Animals Around Us🌳🐄🐝🐦

We find plants and animals everywhere: in gardens, parks, farms, ponds and forests. Plants have roots, stems, leaves and often flowers. They make their own food using sunlight, air and water. Animals cannot make their own food, so they eat plants or other animals.

Animals live in different homes. A bird lives in a nest, a dog in a kennel, a cow in a shed, a bee in a hive and a fish in water.

Animal homes and food

Some animals eat plants and are called herbivores, such as cows, goats and elephants. Some eat other animals and are called carnivores, such as lions and tigers. Some, like humans and crows, eat both.

Caring for plants and animals

Water plants regularly and do not pluck flowers or leaves needlessly. Do not hurt animals and give pets food, clean water and a safe place. Put out a bowl of water for birds in hot weather. Plants give us food, shade and fresh air. Animals give us milk, eggs and help on farms.

1
Plant a seed

Plant a bean or a green gram seed in a pot.

2
Water it

A little each day.

3
Watch

Look for shoots and leaves.

4
Draw

Draw it each week.

Worked examples and common mistakes

Example: Which part of a plant takes in water? The roots. Example: Where does a bee live? In a hive. Common mistakes: thinking all animals eat the same food, saying plants do not need water in the rainy season and thinking that all insects sting. Many insects, such as butterflies and ladybirds, are harmless and help the garden.

💡 Pro Tip: Look closely at one tree near your home every week and draw what you see: birds, insects or new leaves.

Check your understanding: model answers

1. Roots, stem, leaves and flower. 2. A bird lives in a nest and a dog lives in a kennel. 3. Put out a bowl of water and plant trees or shrubs where they can rest.
