Shapes and Patterns: Class 1 Study Guide

Shapes and patterns are everywhere, from rangoli to floor tiles. Spotting them develops logical thinking.

CLASS 1 · MATHSShapes and Patterns🔺⭕🟦🪔

Flat shapes are called 2D shapes. A circle is round with no corners. A square has four equal sides. A rectangle has four sides with opposite sides equal. A triangle has three sides and three corners. Children can trace objects to draw shapes: a coin gives a circle, a book cover gives a rectangle.

Solid shapes are called 3D shapes. A ball is a sphere, a dice is a cube, a tin is a cylinder and a party hat is a cone.

Patterns

A pattern repeats in a regular way. Red, blue, red, blue, red, blue is a colour pattern. Clap, clap, tap, clap, clap, tap is a sound pattern. Children can make patterns with beads, leaves, shapes and numbers. To continue a pattern, find the part that repeats and say it aloud: ABAB or AABAAB.

1
Look at the pattern

▲ ● ▲ ● ▲ …

2
Find what repeats

Triangle, circle.

3
Say what comes next

A circle.

4
Create your own

Use your own shapes.

Rangoli and kolam

Traditional designs such as rangoli and kolam are full of patterns and shapes. They use dots, lines, curves and symmetry. Children can copy a simple design on dotted paper and describe the shapes they see.

Worked examples and common mistakes

Example: What comes next? ■ ▲ ■ ▲ ■ → ▲. Example: Which shape has no corners? A circle. Common mistakes: calling a long rectangle a square, thinking a triangle turned upside down is a different shape and not noticing that patterns can grow (1, 2, 3, 4) as well as repeat. Always ask, 'What is changing?'

💡 Pro Tip: Collect leaves, stones or beads and use them to make patterns. Then ask a friend to guess the rule.

Check your understanding: model answers

1. A triangle. 2. red, blue, blue. The pattern is red, blue, blue repeated. 3. A sphere.

✨ Key Takeaways

  • 2D shapes are flat; 3D shapes are solid.
  • Circle, square, rectangle and triangle are the common flat shapes.
  • A pattern has a part that repeats.
  • Look for the rule to continue a pattern.

💬 Questions for Discussion & Reflection

  • Name a shape with three sides.
  • Continue: red, blue, blue, red, blue, blue, …
  • Which solid shape is a ball?
