Telling Time Worksheets: O'Clock and Half Past
Free printable telling time: o'clock and half past worksheets with answer keys. Clock faces showing o'clock and half past times.
Using this page
Clock faces showing o'clock and half past times. Children read the time and write it, or draw the hands for a time given. The Common Core's Grade 1 standard covers telling time in hours and half-hours on analog and digital clocks. Tick 'Times in words' for answers such as half past 3 instead of 3:30. Suits around Year 1 in Australia and Grade 1 in the US (Common Core 1.MD.B.3), but use whatever level fits the child.
Tips
- Practise with a real clock at home: ask the time at breakfast, after school and at bedtime.
- Point out where the hour hand is between two numbers; it tells you which hour it is.
- Use the draw option after reading: drawing the hands shows real understanding.
- Count the minutes by fives around the clock.
Worked example
The long hand points to 6 and the short hand is halfway between 3 and 4. The long hand on 6 means 30 minutes, or half past. The short hand has passed 3, so the time is half past 3, or 3:30.
Common mistakes
Reading the short hand as the minutes. The short hand shows the hour; the long hand shows the minutes.
At half past, naming the hour the short hand is moving towards, saying half past 4 for 3:30.

Common questions
Why is the hour hand between two numbers at half past?
The hour hand moves slowly all hour. At half past 3 it is halfway from 3 to 4, which is how a real clock looks.
Are 24-hour times included?
No. These sheets use 12-hour clock faces, and digital answers are written like 3:15.
Can I print the same worksheet again?
Yes. Note the worksheet number printed at the top, or keep the link in your browser's address bar, which ends with that number. Entering it later gives the same questions and answers.
Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, and nothing you choose is sent anywhere: the sheets are made in your browser.
