Counting Money Worksheets (Australian Coins and Notes)

Free printable counting money (Australian coins and notes) worksheets with answer keys. Add up groups of Australian coins and notes: 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and…

Using this page

Add up groups of Australian coins and notes: 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2 coins, and $5 to $50 notes when notes are switched on. Coins are drawn as simple labelled circles (the gold $1 and $2 coins have a double ring), so children read the value rather than recognise a picture. Counting money is part of the early primary years in Australia. Suits around Year 1 to Year 3 in Australia, but use whatever level fits the child.

Tips

  • Use real coins alongside the sheet when you can.
  • Count from the biggest coin or note down to the smallest.
  • Play shop at home: put prices on a few items and take turns giving change.
  • Talk about how money is written: dollars and cents, or pounds and pence.

Worked example

$2, $1, 50c, 20c, 20c. Start with the biggest: $2 + $1 = $3. Then 50c makes $3.50, 20c makes $3.70 and another 20c makes $3.90. The total is $3.90.

Common mistakes

Counting coins instead of their values, so five coins becomes $5.

Thinking the $2 coin is worth less than the $1 because it is smaller. Read the number on the coin.

How to use this generator

Choose the options above the sheet: the number of questions and the settings for this kind of worksheet. Every change makes a new sheet straight away, and New worksheet gives a different set of questions with the same settings.

Each sheet has a worksheet number printed at the top. Type the same number later, or keep the page link, to print exactly the same questions and answer key again. Leave Answer key page ticked to print the answers on a second page, then press Print. Every printed page carries the makekite logo and web address.

Common questions

Why are there no 1c or 2c coins?
Australia withdrew its 1c and 2c coins in 1992, so cash amounts here end in 0 or 5 cents.

Are the coins real pictures?
No. They are simple labelled circles and rectangles, so children read the value rather than learn the design, and the sheets print clearly in black and white.

Can I print the same worksheet again?
Yes. Note the worksheet number printed at the top, or keep the link in your browser's address bar, which ends with that number. Entering it later gives the same questions and answers.

Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, and nothing you choose is sent anywhere: the sheets are made in your browser.
