Naming, Doing and Describing Words: Class 2 Study Guide
Words have jobs. Naming words, doing words and describing words build sentences.
A noun (naming word) names a person, place, animal or thing: teacher, Delhi, parrot, book. A verb (doing word) tells what someone does: run, eat, write, sing. An adjective (describing word) tells more about a noun: big, red, sweet, tall.
In the sentence The small parrot eats sweet mangoes, 'parrot' and 'mangoes' are nouns, 'eats' is a verb and 'small' and 'sweet' are adjectives.
Singular and plural
Singular means one and plural means more than one. Most nouns add s (book → books). Nouns ending in s, x, sh or ch add es (box → boxes, dish → dishes). A consonant followed by y changes to ies (baby → babies). A few are irregular: child → children, man → men, tooth → teeth.
| Singular | Plural | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| cat | cats | add s |
| bus | buses | add es |
| story | stories | y → ies |
| child | children | irregular |
Verbs and time
A verb can show what is happening now (I play), what has happened (I played) or what will happen (I will play). Many past forms add -ed, but some change: go → went, eat → ate, run → ran. Adding -ing shows an action in progress: playing.
Who is acting?
What do they do?
Now, before or later?
Adjectives in writing
Adjectives make sentences richer. Compare: The dog barked and The big black dog barked loudly. Use adjectives that answer 'What kind?' (sweet), 'How many?' (three) or 'Which one?' (this). Use a comma between two describing words only when each describes the noun separately.
Worked examples and common mistakes
Underline the nouns: Ravi bought a kite at the market. Choose the verb: The cow (eats/eat) grass. Answer: eats. Common mistakes: writing 'childs' for children, 'goed' for went and using a verb as a noun without thinking about its job. Always ask what job the word is doing in the sentence.
