Introduction to Multiplication and Tables: Class 2 Study Guide

Multiplication is a quick way to add equal groups. Tables are lists of those facts.

CLASS 2 · MATHSIntroduction to Multiplication and Tables✖️🔢🧮🥟

If there are 3 plates with 4 pakoras on each, the total is 4 + 4 + 4 = 12. We write this as 3 × 4 = 12 and read it 'three times four is twelve'. The × sign means 'groups of' and the answer is the product.

In Class 2, children learn tables of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10. The best way is to use patterns and real things: pairs of shoes for the table of 2, wheels of tricycles for 3, legs of chairs for 4 and fingers on a hand for 5.

Making equal groups

3 groups of 4 = 12
3 rows of 4 shows 3 × 4 = 12.

Draw or arrange objects in equal groups, then count the total. Equal groups can be shown in rows and columns, which is called an array.

Tables patterns

TableFirst five answersPattern
22, 4, 6, 8, 10Even numbers; double the number
55, 10, 15, 20, 25Ends in 5 or 0
1010, 20, 30, 40, 50Add a zero
33, 6, 9, 12, 15Add 3 each time
44, 8, 12, 16, 20Double the table of 2

Learning tables well

Say them aloud, forwards and backwards, and fill in missing numbers. Use skip counting on a number line or hundred chart. Remember that order does not change the answer: 2 × 5 = 5 × 2 = 10. Use known tables to find new ones: the table of 4 is double the table of 2.

1
Skip count

3, 6, 9, 12…

2
Say the fact

Three fours are twelve.

3
Write it

3 × 4 = 12.

4
Check with an array

Draw 3 rows of 4.

Worked examples and common mistakes

Example: 5 boxes have 3 pencils each. 5 × 3 = 15. Example: 4 × 10 = 40. Common mistakes: adding when the problem says 'groups of', mixing up 5 × 2 with 5 + 2, and losing count when skip counting. Use fingers or a number line to keep track.

💡 Pro Tip: Set a family goal: one new table per week, practised for five minutes a day. Short, regular practice works best.

Check your understanding: model answers

1. 3 × 5 = 15. 2. 4 × 5 = 20. 3. 6 × 10 = 60 sweets.

✨ Key Takeaways

  • Multiplication is repeated addition of equal groups.
  • × means 'groups of'.
  • Learn the tables of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10.
  • Order does not change the product.

💬 Questions for Discussion & Reflection

  • Write 5 + 5 + 5 as a multiplication.
  • Find 4 × 5.
  • Each bag has 10 sweets. How many sweets in 6 bags?
