Daisy Duck had planned a picnic by the pond. She packed apple slices, little sandwiches and a thermos of warm milk. But when she woke up, the sky was grey, and the rain pattered on her window.

“Oh, no,” she said. “Our picnic is ruined.” She sat at her door with her chin on her wing and watched the raindrops race down the glass.

Her friend Pete Rabbit came hopping up the path under a big leaf. “Daisy,” he said, “why are you sad?” “The picnic is ruined,” said Daisy. Pete looked up at the rain and thought for a moment. “Not if we have a parade,” he said.

Daisy’s eyes lit up. She found her bright yellow umbrella. Pete picked up two spoons and a pot to use as a drum. Together they marched down the lane, pitter, patter, pom, pom, pom.

A hedgehog joined them with a rattle made from a seed pod. Two frogs joined them, and they hopped in time. A little mouse came out under a toadstool, and she sang a tune.

Soon there were ten friends, all splashing through the puddles in a long, wiggly line. The raindrops made music on their umbrellas. Daisy waddled at the front, tall and proud.

When the parade reached the pond, the rain began to ease. A rainbow stretched across the sky, one side on the hill and the other in the reeds. Everyone stopped and said, “Ooooh.”

They spread out their picnic under a big tree, and they shared the apples and sandwiches. Daisy looked at all her friends and smiled. “The best picnics,” she said, “are sometimes the ones we did not plan.”
