Bruno was a big brown bear with a very rumbly tummy. Every morning, it growled, “Breakfast, please!” But the forest was quiet, and the berries were all gone for the winter.

“I will grow my own,” said Bruno. He found an old spade by the cave. He dug neat rows in the soft earth, and he sprinkled in seeds. Carrots, peas, little round radishes, and a bush of blueberries.

Every day, he watered the rows with a big, dented bucket. He pulled out the weeds, and he chased away a snail, very gently. “Not my lettuce, please,” said Bruno.

A family of bees came to visit the flowers. Buzz, buzz, they went. “Thank you,” said Bruno. “You are helping my garden grow.” The bees buzzed back, and a few days later, there were tiny green peas in the pods.

By the time the leaves turned orange, Bruno’s garden was full. The carrots were long and sweet. The radishes were red and peppery. The blueberries were the size of marbles.

He picked a big bowl of everything and sat on a log in the sunshine. Crunch, crunch, went the carrots. Pop, pop, went the peas. Mmm, said the blueberries.

A squirrel and two rabbits peeked through the fence. “What smells so good?” asked the squirrel. Bruno grinned. “Would you like to share my breakfast?” They did, and they all agreed it was the best.

Bruno’s tummy was full and quiet at last. He lay back in the grass, patted it gently, and said, “Next year, I will plant even more.”
