Bo the Little Boat and the Big Blue Bay
A soft, rolling story about taking a first brave trip and finding that the wide water is kind.
Bo was a little wooden boat with a red hull and a white sail. He lived in the harbour, tied to a post by a long, soft rope. Every day he watched the big bay shimmering beyond the wall.
“It looks very big,” said Bo. A seagull landed on his mast. “It is big,” she said, “but the water is kind. Would you like to see?”
Bo wobbled a little. “What if I get lost?” The seagull ruffled her feathers. “I will fly above you, and you can always see the harbour light behind.”
So the fisherman untied Bo’s rope, and a gentle breeze filled his sail. Slowly, slowly, Bo slid out of the harbour. The water went hush, hush, hush against his sides.
Out in the bay, Bo saw a silver fish leap and splash. He saw a school of tiny fish wave their fins like ribbons. He saw a turtle pop up its wise old head and blink.
“Hello, little boat,” said the turtle. “You are brave to come out here.” Bo felt his sail swell with pride. “I was a bit scared,” he said. “That is how you know you are brave,” said the turtle.
The sun slid low and painted the water pink and gold. Bo looked back and saw the harbour light glowing, warm and steady. He knew the way home.
The breeze turned him round, and Bo sailed back with a happy little bob. The fisherman tied his rope to the post and patted his side.
That night, Bo rocked gently in the harbour and dreamed of silver fish and pink water. The next day, he was ready to go out again.
